Male/ Femal howls

On an earlier post somebody was talking about mixing in female howls during their calling sequence. I do howl, but was unaware there was any difference between male and female howls.

What is the difference, and does one work better than the other?

rojo,
There are a lot of coyote men out there who truly believe that they can tell the difference between male and female coyote howls. If they really can, then my hat is off to them. Now during mating time there may well be a female "invitation" howl that can be recognized by the learned. I can tell you for certain that there is no man living that truly understands all coyote language or can actually tell the difference between male and female coyote howls. I saw an honest mistake made by a very well known coyote man just this past summer after we howled this coyote in. He walked over to cut her open to see what SHE had been eating for lunch. Guess what? Yep, it was a big old MALE. Anyway, now that you have my opinion on this matter I am gonna move this topic over to predator hunting forum where more of the coyote experts can see it. Maybe I will end up eating my own words on this.

rojo--some of the "experts" I have learned from say the female invitation howl is a higher pitched sound than a male howl. Like Rich said, though, I'm not a coyote, so I really don't know if that's true or not. However, if you listen to the sounds made by some male and female animals of other species, many times the female voice is higher pitched than the male of that species.

When I use a howler, I try to use a high pitched sound when I do what I think is a female invitation howl. When I do a challenge howl, I try to lower the pitch. It works for me.

Silverfox,
Thank you for jumping in on this one. I really do appreciate your input. I hope some other guys with a few years of experience will jump in here too.

the female howls will usually be alot smoother sounding just like women they can sing better than us guys and a male coyotes howl will be raspy unless its fon 1-2 years old then it will be rather high pitched
Silverfox you right but with the hiigh pitched sounds it could be a pup or close to pup male or female and you alsovery true about an old males howl will be very low. well good luck and hope ya getem howled in!

This conundrum, is akin to the fellas who look at a deer track and mumble something like"man look at that big ole bucks track"......A coyote howl, like a deer track is not known till you inspect it's carcass after hearing it howl, just like shooting the deer thats standing in it's tracks.Makes for amusing campfire chat, but I know better, and am sure many of you do too.
