how is it in your area?? getting to be bad here this year, i have gotten at least 6 really bad ones, seen 3 more in a pack of 10 I called in on sunday,[2 I got were slightly, little red on belly on one and the other a bit on the lower legs, scares me when packed up will spread so fast]I know a trapper south that said he got 5 within 1/2 mile a couple weeks ago,This cold weather will clean them out good but i hate to see it, most years out of around 100 coyotes I get 1-2 this year its 5 times that bad! I was always told and believed from past years that it was worse on dry years becouse they do not like all the wet weather and wet hides but this year we were very wet I was not expecting it to be bad!!Also there is notalot of coyotes this year becouse of the huge kill last year,Just was not expecting it and hate to see the poor buggers suffereing in -40 weather with no fur!!Just wonderign if its just in my area in south sask or all over!!
 
Where in the South are you situated? I have seen no mange around Saskatoon this year, but last year just about everything I got had mange. It could have been just the luck of the draw though. What mange I have seen this year was in the Alberta-Saskatchewan border country, but then again I spend most of my time there. One person's kill just isn't much of a sample to judge by.
I am no expert on the spread of mange, but I don't see that wet or dry weather would have much to do with it. Those little mites are not going to be affected by rain. Exposure to winter weather will hasten the end, but not change it. Mange has been around forever, and will continue to be whether we like it or not. Mange does spread quicker through dense populations, and is one of the only population controllers left.

I am also seeing a number of mangy coyotes. I am in central Alberta and this last couple weeks,about 1 out of every 4 have various degrees of mange.
Its a shame to see these poor yotes try to survive this cold weather but what's worse is seeing 1 mangy coyote running with a couple of good ones. You know its just a matter of time before the others are also infected with mites.
I see a few mangy coyotes every year but this year the percentages are up.
 
dogleg I am in assiniboia, My fur buyer buys thoasands of coyotes a year and he has seen over many years that wet weather usually does have helping effort in mange spread, also they spread by contact and when 10 coyotes are runnign together and feeding on the same deer it will be spread to all!!not saying I am a expert far from it but the guy I am talking about knows more than most of the so called experts out there,he actually has had peopel from universities come from all over to test his carcasses for dog genes and disease! When you deal with thoasands of coyotes a year I guess you see what is going on!!
 
I'll not argue the point about the rain, like I said, I am no expert. There is still nothing that can be done about mange, it is as old as coyotes and will always be there. Its just the way it is.
Do you have this heavy and early snow down there also? It's going to make the coyote hunting tough up here, once the snow starts crusting and hard drifting it will be hard to get around. The sledders are loving it though!
 
ya we have about 15" on the level in the fields,nice to spot the coyotes but hard to get them to coem in, takes forever for them to move,I am sure hoping with the lower prices it keeps the sledders at bay this year,sure was terrable last year down here,really showing on the amount of coyotes also, last year I had 115 this time this year about 65 and I spent more time this year,I cannot get to alot of the spots I would like but close,I have been puttign on 3-4 miles a day walkign to and from spots and been workign good the past coupel weekends,Just to soft for the snowshoes yet so been just walking, sure been taking the toll on me still sore form sunday lol!! Wiht thsi cold snap they ahve been callign liek crazy also, had 11 respond at one stand on sunday, 10 in a pack and 1 from the rear,I have had 9 on two other occasions but never in 1 pack, was awsoeme to see but I tell you i was thinking abotu the wolf attack up norht a few weeks ago when i seen them coming lol!!good luck!!
 
I hear you on it being hard to get them to come through all that deep soft snow. They answer and start coming, then just get tired and stop. I have nearly doubled the length of time I will stay on each set, it is just taking so long to get there.
What's this about a wolf attack? Never heard anything about that, but I'm not home much either.

Thats about the time you need a shotgun w/ the plug removed :eek: Ive never seen that many come to a call around Moose Jaw, 3's and 4's are common.
 
Scott I was just abotu 30 miles south west of moose jaw not far from oldwives lake in the rollign hills!Have great luck up there! First time that many for me to!! Going back that way saterdya but trying a different call and howler and putting soem scent out to keep them interested, rancher is ahving alot of problems in his correls!
