Mangy coyote

I shot one today that was the ugliest coyote I've ever seen. It had mange, and was just about completely bald. I'm sure it would've died from exposure had I not shot it in the head. Called it up off the bluff along the Mississippi River. He came across a pond dyke, where I gave him a warning shot at 250 yards. He ran off the dyke, and stopped when I barked at him. 363 yards, with a 16"AR. Hit him a little higher than I thought it would've. Took him right through the left eye. Have any of you seen any terrible cases of mange this year?

Last year in turkey season we were playing around after a 3 mile hike (unsucessful) with all the call in our vests. I did a cottontail distress on my hawk call and called one that was like you said, almost completely bald. He looked like one of the freaky African/Egyption whatever dogs. As bad as Ive ever seen. A load of 3 1/2" magmun #5's in the face ended his suffering.

FYI A kicks choke will strip off a lot of waddins from a 3 1/2" magnun wadding out the port holes. Enough to imbed several pieces in your legs if you let your buddy shoot across your lap. Don't try this at home!

Shot a female coyote Sunday morning in south central Iowa. 75-80% bald. Had to feel sorry for her. Maybe that's why its been so hard to call them in. Mange may have thinned the population some.

I'm affraid this whole area is being affected guys. Seems a non mangy coyote is getting hard to find in Eastern NE. Mange was really bad in my area last year. In my main 50 mile circle that I hunt alot all but 1 of only 9 coyotes had the mange. Or I just couldn't even find any.Tracks are scarce in many spots. Now I'm hearing that the Sandhills are getting a few mangy one also. Going out there in a few days,,, guess I'll see. Its sad !

Maybe not as bad as yours, but bad enough.
