Mark Twain describes the coyote---

"The coyote is a long, slim, slick and sorry-looking skeleton, with a gray wolfskin stretched over it, a tolerably bushy tail that forever sags down with a despairing expression of foresakenness and misery, a furtive and evil eye and a long sharp face, with a slightly lifted lip and exposed teeth. He has a general slinking expression all over. The coyote is a living, breathing allegory of Want. He is always hungry, he is always poor, out of luck and friendless. The meanest creatures despise him, and even the fleas would desert him for a velocipede. He is so spiritless and cowardly that even when his exposed teeth are pretending a threat the rest of his face is apologizing for it. And he is so homely - so scrawny, ribby, coarse haired and pitiful".- Mark Twain

I don't know about this..^^^:. "Forsaken, cowardly and spiritless"? Forsaken by humans, however his spirit allows him to not only survive, but thrive in a land that is also forsaken.. Forsaken by man.. Unlike our species he has no pre-occupation with vanity nor fake plastic idols.. A trickster respected by Native American's, a spiritual shape shifter with the power of creation as well as the power to heal.. As with, healing dying Kiowa warriors by licking their wounds.. His howls are a communion to not only the earthy world but the sky, as well as the divine..

For of all our methods of persecution, he walks a pretty spiritual path..

No matter what we throw at him, he has shown us that he is here to revel forever more..

yeah, I'm gonna have to disagree with some of Twain's assertions as well...........however as usual he is very eloquently spoken and that was a good read. Most of the ones I see don't look very despairing or miserable or out of luck for that matter. Unless they stop for 1-2 seconds that is lol.
He nailed it with the "slinking" in my opinion though.

I liked it and agree with infidel's post as well.
take a look at my siggy....sharp face with the evil eyes. lol
Ever see the videos with the decoy dogs that some members here post and the way the coyote reacts and its body language? The coyote all arched up teeth showing tail between its legs. that is what i picture....

I have to agree with Infidel 762....the Coyote is an Impressive Species that are true Survivors and have earned My Respect over the years of Hunting them.It is true that they are Opportunist and Scavengers but on the other hand the are very Smart,Wise Hunters and learn to avoid those of Us that consider them worthy Trophies!

At least one tribe had a saying that went something like "when the world comes to the end, the only thing left will be the cockroaches and the coyotes that eat them"

I like his description of the jack rabbit. Something about what else would you call a rabbit with ears that belong on nothing else but a Jackass. A Jackass Rabbit. Hah. I don't remember the quote, a long time since I've read that book, but it was a good read.
