Marlin 336 w/pictures

Hooked

New member
Mentioned in other post so thought I would share a couple of pictures.
Rifle with some 160g Hornady FTX Loaded w/ Ramshot TAC/WLR Primer. I have some data/results with this combination but these loads are almost 2g under that article (Reloading Times?)Anyway the last 3 rnds will be ~.2g above max as found elsewhere. Just very uncertain about pushing my luck

Other picture is first 16 reloads shot at ~60 yards. See very hard to tell IMO what might be the best without some type of optic to get a better (defined?) point of aim.

FWIW- I had read some very negative reviews of the newer Marlins, but fit/finish of this rifle is much better than the example that was given. There are some very faint tool marks from whatever was used to grip the barrel during assembly(my guess), visible right behind the rear sight.

Thanks RB. I will have some fun with it and have the feeling this rifle has the wife interested as well.
Wife was all set to deer hunt with me a few years ago but ended up having to have back surgery and, we never made a `rain date`. I asked what did she like about this rifle and she just said the looks/size..perhaps not as menacing as some of those `other kind` of rifles

Not familiar with the projectile you loaded. Some sort of very soft tip I assume. If not I wouldn't shoot them in a lever gun. Look a little pointy. I always liked the Marlins. The stock fit (pistol grip) and side eject is the attraction for me.

I've been wanting a lever gun for some time now and obviously I can get a decent discount on a new 336 which makes it appealing to me, but I've also been eying the 94 trappers in .45 Colt on GB and those are just sexy as heck, but kinda expensive.

My birch remlin 336 24" bbl shoots 3/4" @100 w/ 160gr leverevolution. Some will be skeptical as the 30/30 is not know for groups that tight but I'm not gonna lie about it to get "Internet respect".

I have no doubts about your results; here are some of mine. This is only 79 yards though and only 3 rounds for starters. Going to load 20 or so more here in just a few minutes.

I have had some marlins in thuty-thuty that shot very well, esp. when you put a good scope on them for load development. I really enjoy hunting with mine and dont feel undergunned. Most of the game I have taken with a scoped bolt action could have easily been taken with the ole thuty thuty.

My 336 in .35 Rem shoot great, I realy enjoy lever guns.

1895G 45/70 - 350gr Hornady FP - 3 rounds @ 75yds - Leupold 2.5x

5 rounds @ 60 not counting the fouler:

That's impressive Bearcat74.
I am enjoying this new 30-30..might have to try and catch an old Western Movie tonight..lol

I love my Marlin Levers. I have had great groups out of my '90 336CS. I also get 5-shots that all touch at 100 yards from my '76 444S Marlin. If I had to keep only 2 guns the would be the above two.

Really enjoyed seeing the old lever gun. A friend of mine offered to trade me one for a Model 70 Winchester I had sitting around and never shot. The Winchester was built about 2000. Turns out the old Marlin was built in 1984 and instead of being a 30-30 it was a .35 Remington. I think I got screwed. I will eventually give it to a grandson (one is supposed to arrive around Christmas this year), or the kid next door.

That's a bummer of a deal UncleDoc but over the years I have made my share of bad deals/trades(regrettable anyway).
Yeah CC, trying to get some loads worked up; very bummed now because after mounting the scope, sighting it in and shooting a first test batch, I got to looking at the scope and thought to myself,`dang I didn`t set that thing that far forward in the rings, did I`. turns out it was moving on me

I just have cheap two piece base, but actually very decent rings. from now on I will have to check that scope mounting hardware is still snug after initial mounting.

Hooked, I use plain old Weaver 1-piece base on all 4 of my Marlin Lever guns. I put a very thin coat of rubber cement in the bottom of my rings on all my guns, and have never had a scope move or turn in the rings.

Uncle Doc, I have never had a Marlin in 35 Rem, (I have 3, 30-30's, and a 444Marlin) but I have a couple buddies with the 35, and they really like them for deer, I think they are shooting around a 200 grain bullet in the 35.

In 1976 I purchased a .444 Marlin, hoping for a good close range deer rifle. It proved to be much more than I ever expected.

I load Hornady 265 gr. Flat Point bullets that are amazingly accurate. One particular time I shot a 3-shot group with all rounds touching at 100 yards.

The cartridge is powerful and hits with authority. It has dropped two wild hogs on the spot, and I took my first deer with it.

Great rifles, and very accurate as well. I don't shoot it as often as I should.

The scope is an old Weaver Microtrac 1.5x4.5

I was being a little facetious. The 336 of that vintage and in 35 Remington is a real find. Here in North Carolina they are very rare. Once you get north beyond Pennsylvania they become a little more common. Great deer and black bear caliber and the kids will enjoy it even if I don't.
