Does anyone use Equine/horse Wormer on their dogs and if so what dosage? A buddy of mine order some and dropped off some extra(Pyrantel Paste:Durvet) but I'm not sure how much and if its the proper stuff. I've heard of guys using ivermectin, but again, unsure of dosage.

I am a vet. pyrantel is a safe wormer for dogs if at proper dosage. Its not a great wormer since it does not get whipworms. I would have to know the concentration of the drug to advise you on how much to give. Ivomec is a good dewormer. 1cc of 1% ivomec orally works well in dogs as long as they are not amn Ivomec senstive breed( herding breeds such as collies). If your dog has heartworms you could potetionally have an issue w/ that large of a dose in dogs as well.

I use it along with alot of other guys. Put about a bean size glob on your finger and stick it on the roof of their mouth.

Its good stuff, and pretty safe. A few months ago I got a different type than usual, the old stuff had the dial on the back, one click per dog, the new one worked a little different, and I gave my hound Blue a whole tube. He was fine, but now I put a glob on my finger lol.

We've used it for yrs. When you have a lot of dogs, you have to look for cost cutting, while still maintaining a good health progrom. Along with this said 1.87 Ivermectin is what we use for heart worm prevention. We give it once a month. You have to watch not giving certain kinds like Ivermectin plus, which has stuff that is not good for dogs. The horse Ivermectin gold has Praziquantel in it which is for tape worms. Some dogs can have a reaction to this when admistered orally. There is an injectable Praziquntel that we give that doesn't seem to effect the same dogs that had a reaction to the Ivermectin Gold. As for giving Ivermectin to dogs that are infected with Heart worms it can be a "Crap Shoot" there depending on the severity of the infection. Example I got a 2yr old Blue Tick last yr that tested with light case of heart worms with a slight heart murmur. I spoke with the vet who also Co-owns some of our other dogs, and I gave him double does of horse Ivermectin for 6 mos. and retested him. He tested negative for heart worms, but still has slight heart murmur, but that doesn't seem to slow him down any.

Ive used the horse wormer in the tube before but ever since I found out about the Ivomec thats all I use. Amazing how many wornings the small bottle will last.

When I said i gave the dog double dose horse wormer, I ment that I gave him a double does of what I would normaly give a dog. for doesage usually refer to weight measurment on tube plunger and put on finger and rub on roof of dog's mouth like was mentioned above. I usually go a little over due to fact it's hard to get every bit in their mouth.

I just started using Zimmectin Gold on my dogs. After talking to quite a few guys that use it with good results I decided I'd try. No dead dogs and no worms, I guess it's working good. I gave both of my dogs a 100lb dosage and they seem to be doing great. They defiantely don't like the taste but both took it down just fine. Time will tell if it's as good as the inceptor I was using before.

Good info here guys. I've got some questions if you don't mind.

At what age should a pup be started on a steady heart worm regimen?

Also, dew claws. This pup I have has a dew claw on one front leg and not the other. She seems to bite at it quite a bit so I assume it bothers her. You guys remove those yourself, have a vet do it, or don't mess with em?

Thanks in advance.

PS. Why would this pup have one dew on one foot and not the other? Just born that way or maybe she pulled it off when she was smaller?

I can't help ya with all of it but I can give ya a personal experience with dew claws. My border/heeler dog had dew claws, so we decided to get them removed when we had the vet neuter him. What a pain in the azz!!! I would never do that again. He had about 8 staples in each of his front legs for about 2-3 weeks. They wanted the wounds kept wrapped for 2 weeks, ya right. Try to keep a 6 month olds paw's and legs wrapped for 2 weeks. It was a giant nightmare and he ended up ripping off the bandages and we had to get it re-stapled 1 time. The next time he ripped it off we just super glued the wound closed. I would just wait til your dog rips it off. Just my 2 cents.

We remove dew claws ourselves at 2 days of age with toenail clippers and gently cut it out of the socket, cauterize it with a soldering pen. No bleeding or infection. Can't tell they ever had any. As to when we start using Ivermec at 8 wks. Prior to that if the mother has been on a good heart worm prevention regiment the puppies will still have her immunity. We start worming puppies with Pyrantel at 3 wks.

Always had them removed by my buddy who's a vet. Dew claws and tails docked at two days old....regular price....$10 a pup if less than 5 pups, more than 5 its $5 a pup.

Man, nice to know there are still some places where folks want to help you, rather than help themselves to you.

That's what I'd like to know also.

I'm ready to start this little brindle chit on some heart worm something or the other, I just don't know what.

If using the horse Ivomec, I would presume the amount given to a 10 pound pup would be less than to a 40 pound dog? Like how much would you give a 10 pound puppy? I read where Jesse said a "bean sized glob". I'm guessing that's for an adult dog.

So, like a "half bean sized glob" for a puppy?

In Big R the other day I saw 1.87% ivomec? Is that the stuff you guys are talking about?

Thanks guys.

This topic came around some time back. After that thread I started Tucker on a bi-monthly 50 to 100 pound dose of 1.87% Equine Ivomec. The advice that tipped it for me came privately from a member that I consider to be highly qualified with mucho country dog experience.

We worm our horses quarterly, sometimes less often, but I am sure that Tucker while hunting and checking traps is exposed to parasites more often as she is still pretty prone to finding and claiming trophies and prizes that are not exactly sanitary.

However, that said I am cautious about giving any health care advice to others.

I hear talk about burning up kidneys, liver, etc. Still looking for some "FIRST HAND" experience with these issues.

I must admit that I would start a pup that age on a dog wormer as per advise by a vet or other person of significant, specific experience.

Guys, if you have one or two dogs, I would just go with regular dog wormer, especially as a pup. I never worm pups with the equine stuff. Its pretty cheap to treet them for the first six months.

For the last 6 years I haven't used anything but injectable ivomec. I just started using the paste and am happy with it. My brother has been using it for about ten years, and has had no side affects. He has raised several litters of good healthy pups who's parents have always been wormed with equine paste.

Dogincoyotes, I wouldn't worry about the dew claw, she may rip it out some day, but it isn't that big of a deal.

Guys I am a vet. 1% ivomec made for swine or cattle ijectable works great in dogs as a dewormer and HW prevenative at 1cc per 40lbs. just no collies or herding breeds.

dewclaws and tails are easy to do at 2-5 days of age. much more trouble and very painful after that.

using ivomec gold or plus can hurt your dog. don't use it.

I hear alot of complaints about vet bills. something to remember is your not paying for the drug or products I am prescribing. You are paying for my brain and education. I spent 8 years in school and came out oweing roughly 80,000 is school loans. I make less than just about every other perfessional out there. I am not complaining, I love my job and have a great life, but don't think we are getting rich because we are not. I had the grades do just about anything i wanted. I chose veterinary medicine because I love it, but it gets under my skin when people act like we are ripping them off. I am honest to a fault and write off a ton of unpaid bills from clients that think that I am the county hospital subsidized by the gov. I do my best to offer as much free advice on places like this as a way to give back to a great place. Ok now I will get off my soapbox.
