Medium to high end scope for calling rifle.

I have my first AR being built right now, .223, 18 inch barrel, its being built for lightweight and maneuverability for a calling rifle. With that being said, I would like some input for a good quality scope that is also lightweight and tough. I'm not looking for a long range scope as I don't plan on more than 300 yards. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks.

I put a Nikon 4x on one of mine and really like it. It has a wide field of view and has enough magnification to reach out there, and is fairly compact.

+1. I have VXR 2-7 on my RR Coyote Carbine I really like.

The viper HS or PST 2.5-10X44 are a very nice scopes and would be very nice on top of a calling rifle. I am putting a Minox 2-10X40 on my 16" AR for calling and general varmint hunting. The glass in the Minox is phenomenal and the cost is relatively low if purchased off the demo list at Camera Land. The Minox is also fairly light which is always a plus on a rifle that will be carried a lot.

I have three calling rifles. One wears a VX-III, 2.5X8. The other two wear VARI-X-III 2.5X8. I kinda like those scopes.(DUH) If I were to change anything I would consider changing to a 1.5X6 VX III or VARI-XIII on my AR carbine.
I hunt mostly woods and field edges. Three hundred yards would be a looooooooong poke for me. You need to consider YOUR use.
It took me a long time to FINALLY realize that I (And I think most folks) was/are over scoped.
I had a 4.5X14X50 on one of my calling rifles with cheap ammo it would shoot about 1"-1-1/4". Now, it shoots about the same with the same ammo with a lower powered scope, and I have a much larger field of view. I'm sure I could measure the difference but it just wasn't worth the effort to see a 1/8 " difference. Eye balling the groups I can see a small difference.
Best of luck on your decision.

how much magnification do you want? for a med to high end scope i'd recommend the Zeiss Conquest or an IOR unless you're wanting to move up into the S&B, swaro or high end zeiss arena. Minox and Kahles might be worth looking into. i own their binos but havent had a scope made by these companies but the binos are quality.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'm looking real hard at the Zeiss conquest. Anyone have suggestions on a good place to buy? Or see if the local wholesale sports has one?

Swaro z6 1-6 if you want high end.I use the zeiss 3x9 and love it.Good fov at 3x,crisp and clear, good at night.Mine doesnt have the side focus but parallax isn't an issue at 300yrds for critters.Next purchase will be the 1-6 as I rarely leave 3x though
I recall the prices being compatable everywhere, bought mine at bass pro after looking at all the major online sites.

Bushnell tactical 3-12, weaver tactical 3-15, Bushnell hdmr 3.5-21, NF 3-15, the sightron SIII line is absolutely fantastic.

There are ffp & sfp there, for 300 & under, ffp isn't really needed, but for running shots can be an asset.

Mid-high says $800-$1500 to me, these are right in that area, the bushy and weavers are good values.

Trijicon TR-20-2, 3x9 power, mildot reticle with amber aiming in center. Beautifully clear and sharp, the the low end allows quick target acquisition, the high end allows for plenty of precision. The amber dot for aiming is wonderful and adjusts instantly to any lighting condition I've tried it in. The mildot allows precise aiming at ranges other than my standard 50/200 yard sight in.

Bill Wilson of gunsmithing fame is an avid pig hunter and lists this as one of his favorite scopes, though I believe he prefers the green reticule.
