Michigan Suppressor Owners EDIT: NOW LEGAL!

Exactly! It's scheduled for 1pm on the agenda on Jan 14th at Crystal Mtn Resort in Thompsonville. Of course, our goal is for them to be allowed for ALL game.

If I am reading the article correctly the final vote is on February 11. Does that mean we can hunt with cans on February 12th? I definitely call and write as much as possible. Chris

The first reading at the Jan 14th meeting will basically tell us what's happening and when(if anything). The February meeting would be the required final reading to any rule changes.

Fingers crossed we'll soon be able to.

It was just released yesterday by the NRA and the ASA that if Michigan approves silencers (suppressors) for hunting in their first reading tomorrow (Thursday) there are two restrictions that are unacceptable: They will limit us to no more than 30dB reduction based on Mfg specs AND no sub-sonic ammo allowed. That 40dB avg rimfire can you have, you won't be able to use it for small game or predators etc......

These restrictions are arbitrary and capricious and there was no mention in the DNR memo that the NRA obtained that indicated how the enforcement would be conducted (i.e. are the going to buy every C/O a $5000 B&K meter???????).

They admitted in their own memo that none of the States that responded indicated any sigificant increase in trespassing, poaching or safety zone violations. Yet the only reason that was given in the memo to support the restrictions was "The reduced report may make it more difficult for citizens and officers to determine the distance and location of a shot". They also cite officer safety concerns of not knowing where a shot may come from.

This is absolutely incredible for Michigan to even consider this as none of the 37 other States have any such restrictions whatsoever. Please contact your rep today as it appears the fix is in unless there is such intervention and even speaking during public comment may not be enough to eliminate these outlandish proposals!

Also, if you haven't already, send an e-mail supporting legalization of suppressors WITHOUT restrictions to the NRC Commissioners today.

NRC@Michigan.gov

Any updates? I know I do not fully understand this process, but anyone know what happened today? If it goes through with those restrictions it might as well not happen.....
ExCavTanker thank you for keeping up on this. Chris

I called the Lansing Office and had to wait for a call back from their PR person, he told me there was no action taken and that it was informative only, but that memo was brought into the record. He also said that the public comment was all against the two restrictions and that either the NRA or ASA (he didn't remember) also spoke out against the two restrictions. It will be decided at the Feb 11 meeting in Detroit. It will either pass appropriately or it will pass as presented and we'll be the GD laughing stock in the Country as it relates to suppressors!

Update:

Got an e-mail from my State Rep that I'm working with on this (Cole 105th) and he included comments from NRC Chairman Matonich. While it was a lengthy e-mail, one of the key things said by the Chairman was all of the commissioners will be attending a suppressor demo put on by the American Suppressor Association before the Feb 11th meeting. I know it's hard to believe, but the chairman also indicated many of the commissiners have not had the opportunity to witness or use suppressors. He also referenced the public comments at the meeting and the e-mails they have received in support of unrestricted use.

I commend the ASA for the demo/education they're putting on. I hope this is one more piece of the puzzle to get these ridiculous restrictions overturned but this IS State Gov't so we shall see.

Thanks and I agree, hearing protection should not be hampered by State lines.

I still can't wrap my brain around it. We have a 3 day hunt next week that we have been planning for the last month. Now, a few days out and I get to use my thunderbeast on my AR. Always kind of regretted getting that can and not being able to hunt with it. Who's laughing now? I am!!!
