Midwest coyote calling contest

Me and my partner ended up only placing 7th in the sportsmans division. We hunted our asses off but the land did not have the dogs that it had when we scouted it. I will elaborate better in a thread with some play by play later when i get my camera at home.

293 coyotes killed by everyone and 900 some seen by everyone. First place in the pro class was a tie for first with 11 dogs i think. Les Johnson took third with 10 coyotes. They paid and gave plaques out to 14th place in the pros. 14th place had 5 dogs. Largest dog in the whole comp was 44 pounds(which i think someone messed up on) Smallest dog was 15 pounds. It was a pretty fun ordeal.

First place in the sportsman division had 6, 2nd had 5, 3rd had 5, and then there was a 6 way tie for 4th place or even more. They only give plaques and checks out to ninth so there may have even been more with 4. Anyways team that took fourth had 110 pounds with 4 dogs two teams tied for 5 with 105.8 pounds and we landed 7th with 105.4 pounds. I bet one of our dogs took his daily crap right before we shot him LOL. I will make a thread later with my story and pics.

Im sure the results will be up soon on Brents web page or someone will post it. I dont know names of many of the people in it and am horrible at remember them anyways. Just remember Les. Congrats to all the other guys from here who entered. It was a good time and lots of good sportsman at that event.

thats pretty cool. I wish they would do something like that up here. I was wondering how they judged the "calling contest" but now I see its who gets the most dogs or the most weight.

Good job on 7th!!

Orion and I took 3rd in a tie-breaker for second with 5 dogs in the Sportsman's Warehouse class. A very good hunt and turnout. We got blown out on Saturday with 70 MPH winds and ended up at Orion's house napping and making calls. Only killed one on Sat and came back Sun morning with 4 more.

Here are some pictures, I took pictures of all the boards and can post of you want. I'm just showing the winners on this one from the Competitive class.

Wasn't that wind a hoot Paul!! We were in it as well. Did 14 stands on Sat. and only called in one pair, killed one. My partner finally got some sand/dust in his eye and ended up loosing a contact at about 1:30, which is what finally sent us back to the truck. We weren't smart enought to quit otherwise!
We also managed to pick up 4 more Sunday morning which put us in a 5 way tie for 11th in the open class. Wouldn't ya know it, our coyotes weighed the least of the 5 teams. I guess we should've stopped on the way back and drug them through some snow to add some water weight!
Maybe next year.

Looked like you bought the right team though, and paid for your weekend, plus a little! Nice going on that move!

Those are what are called blocks. On the block will be the team number, the date and time of kill. An effective way of keeping track of who's is whos from the time of kill to the time of skinning.

Yes, I only bought one team and I guess it was that right one! Kind of lucky I guess. Not normally a very lucky gambler, but they looked good to me and they gave up on bidding. Don't think I would have gone much higher.

We did some experimental calling down wind just before dark on Saturday and was able to call in one down wind, but he saw the truck from atop a sand hill. Had we covered the truck (and we did stand there and talk about it for a few seconds before deciding not to /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif) we would have had one more. It would have taken a 33 lb dog for us to take first.

We did hunt a new area Sunday that seemed to be pretty good. But the stands went dry after the first four with kills. We really thought we were on a role for a minute. Then the door was slammed. Had we been able to hunt Saturday, things may have been different. But then again, it would have been for everyone hunting in the windy parts.

You know it's windy when you shoot a dog and have to hussle out to get him before the winds takes him another 500 yards down wind!!
