Minnesota Wolf Hunting

I was wondering if anyone on here has any info on how good or bad the wolf hunting is in Minnesota. And how hard would it be for me to do a "hunt on my own" wolf hunt?

I believe the quota of 400 wolves was reached, but at least half of them were trapped.

Getting drawn for a tag is the hard part, esspecially for non residents.

I haven't had the luck of being able to hunt wolves, but it seems that it would be pretty tough in these woods. Most of the wolves shot were taken during deer season, just pure luck for the tag holder most the time.

If you are lucky and get drawn there is lots and lots of public land to hunt. MN has a population of wolves from about 1 hr north of the cities, almost impossible to get a tag for this zone, to the Canadian border, more tags available and from the east border all the way to the western border. Do your home work and put some time in combined with luck and you might get a wolf. Of course in certain areas you will have a better chance of harvesting one.

You could always do a joint deer/wolf hunt if those season dates line up better for you but most callers and all trappers are pretty much focused on the second season which last year was longer in most zones and falls after firearm deer season is closed. I'm sure we will have a quota again in each zone, so those who wait to hunt until later in their zone may or may not get a chance.

Only way to know is to apply for the tag and hopefully get lucky. Keep us informed and some of us can probably help you narrow down an area.

I was in same boat as borkon, 3 days of calling, 15 sets in north east MN. Saw a lot of tracks but no fur!!!

But try for a tag and find some public ground and try it out. What's the worst that can happen??

I think that would be a better idea for an out-of-towner.

I know a guy that runs an outfit in the Sawtooth Mountains in Idaho and they have had good luck with wolves, they even had one guy get one with a bow last year.

Not much for a website, I'm not sure its even been updated sence they started offering much for wolf hunts but top notch outfit in a great hunting area. They are the only ones allowed to run an outfit from this large chunk of land. So unless some locals bring their horses and mules out, there are very few people that travel as far into the mountains as they do.

Give Robert a call. Tell him Matt M from Minnesota gave you his name, probably wont get you a discount but he may lend me my own mule next time Im out hunting elk

Hello Bail,
I will make this easy for you. Hunt in Beltramie State Forest area, all the way north to the Lake of the Woods. (L.O.W.) look down any logging trails West of Route one. Get in there 5-10 miles west. now go south of route 11. from 11, too the red lake, south. lots of tracks down the logging trails. lots of wolves up here. pick a town for a motel on 11 or around red lake. Happy hunting in Minnesota.

Hello Fellow Wolf hunters,
I have a few things to say.

First, i was talking to the Norris Camp people here in Beltramie,
(DNR). They said in Jan. or Feb. there might will be another wolf season.
We might have 2 seasons a year here in Minnesota, that would be nice.

Second, i have been watching wolves up here in beltramie to the L.O.W. and there are lots around.

Third, i clean a grouse let the feathers and guts there, wolf comes in and eats them all up in a day or two.
I think wolves walk and hunt the trails alot up here at night.
Then again last year while walking down one of my trails where i know a 100 pound wolf walks the same trail, i bumped into her, clear sky out, windy a little, and at 1:00 in the afternoon. At 35 yards in front of me. only had #8 bird shot so i fired 4 feet over her head. she looked right at me, i got ready for a cloce encounter but after a stare down she just jumped off the trail and disappeared
in the brush. i carry Buck #4's now, 3inchers. to even out the odds now. but it happened pretty fast.

Four----if it is leagal to bait wolves, yes it should work. day or night.
i don't know about night hunting. but at dawn & dusk, should work, they are not pressured.
