Decided to go out last night and try to get a few stands in, and was cruisung down a gas line road than all of a sudden bobcat runs across the road, I jump out with the ar-15 and starting searching but no luck. I then decided to put out the foxpro and woodpecker decoy, backed the truck up 100yds in a ravine, got setup 20-25 yds from the decoy. turned the foxpro on a rabbit in distress decoy. then decided to put camo gloves on, then all of a sudden the cat crosses the road back towards the decoy in the bushes. by now i figure the cat was gone again then i noticed him stalking the woodpecker i stood up and my heart was racing like i just saw a 360 bull elk, I put the crosshairs on him and let one off, the cat jumped 2 feet in the air, i missed. i saw him again 2-3 yards to the right and ripped another one off. missed again. shi**., after that my heart was really racing decided to walk up the wash and look for blood and believe it or not i ended up seing him 4 more times in and out of the bush and MISSED all 4 times. now just to tell you me and the wife just went to the range and sighted in 7 different rifles and they were all on the money, just cant beleive i missed that close CAT FEVER INSTEAD OF BUCK FEVER

shoulda had my shotgun

What distance was the cat from you.

If you have your rifle sighted in at 100+ yards, then by holding on the vitals, you would have shot under at 50 yards or so..

I have my AR15 sighted in at 200 yards, and knowing that most shots will come 100yds or less. I aim for the top of the back. Has never let me down yet. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

One other thing, you didn't mention your AR config. It is a flat top or a Hbar? That extra 3+ inches on the top of the hbar can be a pain if you try and use the scope at close quarters.

You may have actually hit him. In a lot of the videos I've seen, bobcats when hit will jump in the air and then take off. Way to go by calling him back in though.

I thought that at first to CJG, All that I have seen did the same when they were hit. They are tough little critters.

You said you went and looked for blood, I assume you didn't find any?

Being a cat, you need at least 10 rounds in one to guarantee a kill. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Those 9 lives can really be a pain. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

He was at the most 25 yds, i lokked pretty hard for blood and peices of fur and the last spot i saw him he did`nt look wounded at all. out here in arizona we tend to shoot long distance so that`s what i usually practice, i think it`s time when i got to the range to practice the 20-30-40-50 yrd shots.

yesterday i was using bushmaster carbon ar-15 14 inch barrel 60 gr vamx an inch high @ 100 yards. scope is probably 2.5 -3 inches high above the barrel. i aimed right at the chest ( cat was looking at me dead on, and figured i must have pulled it right or left. wish i woulda had my tall shooting stix

I am also in AZ. I shot my 3rd bobcat last week at about 30 feet with my shotgun. The week before my hunting partner missed a 200' hail-mary shot at one running away from us after it came in and left a heavily brushed stand with us never seeing much of it. I have found that bobcats will come close into a stand that's correctly set up. HICAP40, your situation was far from typical and out of your control as it was a chance sighting. As you said, shooting sticks and you sitting will facilitate a steady shot. Ideally I would much rather shoot one with my shotgun at 25' than a rifle shot from any distance. The chances of tearing up the pelt increase 40 fold when using my rifle.

Bobcats always make my heart pound.

I would be willing to bet that you shot under him. That 2.5 to 3 inches plus an inch at 100 yards would be low at 25 yards, 3 to 5 inches low.

I shot a Bobcat with my bow. When the arrow hit him in the sweet spot he jumped like 4 ft in the air and then took of on a hard run before tipping over.

Hbar is a barrel contour and has nothing to do with how high the scope is mounted. Im guessng you meant carry handle.

I did, I've always heard them referred to as h-bars though. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Learn something new every day. I checked a little more and hbar means heavy barrel. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I guess it was the context that I have read the posts in. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif
