Missed Opportunity

After 2 stands in the dark with light and shotgun this morning I managed to call in a housecat.

At sunrise I was in a spot that the landowner said he had been seeing a few. After about 20-25 minutes a yote shows up about 300 yds out. It was moving pretty quickly and I can tell it is going to try and circle and since I was a little quick to pick the stand I didn't notice that anything that circled would be hidden from my view until it got in position to wind me. It stopped in an opening at about 250 yds and I missed. Scope was only on 4X but i was worried that if I took time to adjust he would be gone.

Result is an educated yote.
-Should have picked the stand more carefully.
-should have dialed the power up on the scope as soon as I saw the yote.
-also relaized how important it is to have shooting sticks. I hate to carry yet another item but they would have helped!

To add insult to injury a couple guys that were doing some drive hunting stopped to talk while I loaded my stuff. I ended up leaving my camo hunting seat at the spot I loaded up. In the 2 minutes it took to turn around and go back it was gone. The guys I was talking to must have picked it up after i drove off!
 
It's all part of the learning process. A little advice though. When you see a yote comming to the call, dont touch your scope. You never know how close he's gonna get so why go through the uneccessary movment of turning the scope up if it might end up at your feet. The yote will look plenty big in the scope at 200yds with 4x.
Shooting stix are better than nothing, but a bi-pod is better yet cause you screw it to the gun and dont have any extra stuff to carry.

Good job calling in a yote. I know that had to feel good /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif.

the other 2 I have called were killed by a hunting partner so it was fun to do both the calling and the shooting!

My only kill was one that came by my stand before i even started the calling sequence and that was 2 years ago so it feels good to do some shooting again.

The area I hunt seems to get alot of pressure from guys who drive and shoot. Do you think that hunting technique has any negative affect on how the yotes respond to calls other than there being fewer of them?

I believe the yotes will be more hesitant to come accrosed an open area in the daytime with this type of stuff going on. I dont think it will have a negative effect on your night calling at all though.
 
It does make night hunting unbelievable, trust me. I don't see much for coyotes, or call much in unless i am night hunting, or the last call as its pretty much dark. Keep at it though, its fun to see one that isn't pretty much a shawdow.
