Model 7 in 17rem

Swap those Leupy bases out and replace with some Talley's to knock some weight off.

Nice buy, Corey.

You're going to enjoy the .17 rem. With my .17Rem, I don't clean unless my accuracy drops off. Last time I cleaned mine, I had over 300rds down the tube...

I told the guy I was going to predator hunt with it and I thought he was going to pass out. I collect guns, but they are working guns. Since it is rare, I'm going to save back some cash and try to replace the stock by next year to protect this one. I almost hate it is so rare and in good shape. I was really looking forward to a home camo job on my 17rem. predator "death stick" project. No way I can paint this one. I'll look for a take off stock or maybe try and get a seconds laminate from Boyds or Richards and bed it up nice and paint the replacement stock camo. It has a few safe marks on it from handling. Doesn't look to be fired from what I can tell. I'll try and get a 17cal rod and patch it and see. Going to get a few boxes of 25gr. factory hollow points and sight it in tomorrow. I know it is a little soon, but I have a grey fox and coyote located that need attention and I want to see what all the rage is about. I think I'm going to take it on a maiden voyage tomorrow night along with the new FoxJack.

Thanks for all the advice guys. Add another new groupie to the 17caliber madness club

Dude, I'm a huge Seven fan and that is a honey of a rifle you got there!
I wouldn't touch a thing on it. Hunt that baby just like it is and just take a little extra care handling it. Or, pick up a roll of that camo Vet Wrap stuff if you wanna protect it & deaden some shine off the front end...

Hope it shoots well for ya, I'm jealous!!!

Thanks Fred. This is my second model 7 and apparently I got lucky getting some different ones on both. My other 7 is a 7mm08 in the LS model. It'll cut holes at 100yds with my 140SGK load and IMR 4064. I haven't see the laminate factory stock on a bunch of them, and there are virtually no takeoff stocks from them. I bought this one around 2001-2002.
MODEL7.jpg

I tuned the trigger on my old one but this one came to me nice and light and crisp. It might be 2lbs. I got a buddy to pick up a couple boxes of Remington 25gr. HP ammo to get me hunting and a set of temporary Leuold rings to fit this base until I can swap it out. They didn't have the DNZ or Talley's at the store. I plan to start accumulating reloading stuff soon starting with Redding dies and a 17cal funnel. I also need a 17cal Dewey rod and probably a bore guide now that I'm seeing how nice they can be. If this setup works well I may just leave it alone. I can't wait to take her out Saturday night, cold front is coming in and forecast for snow is on for Sunday. Deer are on their feet right now more than I've seen in a long time, should be a good calling night. I think I might be more excited about this little jewell than I was over my 243 build

Very good looking MDL7 Corey. What weight does that scales show?
I've gone the gambit on 17 cal. cleaning rods and the one that has held the best for me is Pro Shot uncoated. Montana Extreme mixed 1/3 with Kroil Oil and the Wipe-Out is your friend with 17 calibers. Oh, and you will want a cleaning rod guide.
What optics are going on it?

WARNING, WARNING!!!! 17 Remingtons are extremely addictive. Your wife will need to get you some help, but to be fair to her you need to let her know that there is NO CURE.

The perfect 17 cal. funnel and chamfer tool........ CRT

A Forster Benchrest seater die set is your "no pinched" finger friend and a Lee collet neck sizer die.
Redding dies are very good, I just happen to think that the Forster Benchrest set is better.

there were two laminated stocks just like yours on ebay a day or two ago for 95.00

It weighs right at 6.5lbs with Leupold base. I am torn on the scope options. I have several ideas. I have a Pentax Gameseeker 3x-9x-50mm BDC as a calling scope on my AR right now and a Burris Signature 6x-24x-44mm AO as a varmint scope. I have a Nikon Buckmasters 4x-12x-50mm SF on my Baikal combo gun that is identical to the one I run on my Model 7 in 7mm-08 for deer. On one hand I like the idea of my deer rifle and calling gun being identical down to the scope and rings, but the other, I don't think the Pentax will hold up to the nasty recoil of the Baikal if I move it over. The Pentax is clear and accurate as my AR has shown, but it isn't AO or PA and I'm guessing it's only set at 100yds focus. The 17rem will replace my AR for calling scenarios and my Baikal will only get used for calling when I'm hitting really thick stuff or calling during spring turkey season. The AR will get the 6x-24x permanently as a varminter as it should be as a 15lb gun. I think I might try the Pentax at the range Saturday morning and see how it does for me and take a look at 200-300yds with it. If it looks fuzzy, then I'll sacrifice the Baikal and steal the Buckmaster that I like anyway. If the Pentax looks clear to 300yds, I'll run it until I can afford better. It has been repaired once and I don't want it to leave me hanging. I'm also thinking that I can fudge the pinky swear with the wife and try and save for a nice 2x-7x-32mm for the Baikal, move the 4x-12x-50 to the 17rem and sell the Pentax or drop it on something else in the cabinet that needs glasses like my pump 30-06 that hasn't been used in over 10yrs. Technically a scope or stocks aren't gun purchases

Man O Man!!!!
What a beautifull rifle!
So much nicer than the bed-liner finish that's on so many of todays rifles.
A nice little 2.5-8 VX3, and you've got the perfect Predator rig IMO.
Some N-140 behind 25gr Nagel T-000's should put a smile on your face, although you might have to go to a little faster powder to get a complete burn in that shorter barrel.
Enjoy

ETA,,,, just thought of something.
You might want to stick with that one piece base that's on there since the older M7's only have one mounting hole in rear of the reciever.

Are you trying to get me killed

? Actually there is one there bidding at $51 right now. I think I'm going to do like Fred said and be careful with it and see how it does. If it doesn't shoot well, then I'll have a reason to replace it and get something I don't mind monkeying with.

Ain't that the truth. I had put big green out of my mind for a 17cal predator rifle for that very reason. I bought the SPS-V for my 243 varmint base and it ended up being just that. Only original part left is the bolt and action and both of those got trued. I love my Remmy's that I have and am by no means a brand snob and was shopping for Savage/Stevens actions and AR uppers when I found this, but I like the ergonomics of the Remington bolt action. I think this will give me years of enjoyment while being a good investment.

As for buying a VXIII, no way I can sneak that by momma. You better believe she's watching me like a hawk. I'm eating Ramen and avoiding the top shelf stuff at the ABC place for a while over this one. Luckily I have a little celebration sippin' stuff left stashed away for when I bring the first pelt home with it

. Now to get some lead in a fox and see what happens next. How are the Nagels on little fox like the greys? That seems to be what I encounter most and they are the ones I have the hardest time not destroying.

X2. That is a very nice rifle. I've got the fever for my brothers Model 7 again. I may have to work on him some more this weekend about aquiring it.

I'm not a Fox hunter so I'll leave that for K22, Tim, or just about any one else to answer, but I can tell you that they preform very similarly to the old Berger MHP's before Walt sold out and the quality took a dive.
Chan actually uses the exact same J4 jacket FWIW.

Oh,,,, and since you're sleeping lightly these days, I'd go easy on that "Scamper Juice" least ya wake up with a Bobbit.

I know Tim, it was a matter of time until I got careless and brought this terrible disease home. You'll have that when you hang out in places like this

Corey,

Showoff!!! Now you've done it. That's one more fine mess you have got all of us into. Got us to foaming at the mouth with desire for one.

Man, I love Model 7s.
