Model 722 Remington

I have just received this rifle from my Grampa. My question to you rifle pro's is this rifle built well or should I have a gunsmith do some work to it? I have never heared of this model did they discontinue this model because of troubles?

The 722 is the forerunner of the 700 and is very similar. I have been using and shooting these rifles for years. Clean it well and enjoy your grandad's rifle.

My brother and I split cost and bought one in 1965 when I got out of the Navy. It was used but in great condition. It was a 222 Rem. That thing could shoot. I wish I still had it today. I put a BalVar 2.5 x 8 scope on it. It was our woodchuck gun at that time.
I'd be glad to take it off your hands if you don't like it lol
If my memory is correct, (which it isn't most of the time) it had a 24 or 26 inch. barrel. Measure yours and let me know how long the bbl is please.
BTW the 722 was the short action for .222 and similar calibers and the 721 was long action for 06, 270 type cals.

BTW, you never said what caliber yours is????

The 722 and the 721 were the first center fire rifle Remington made when they resumed commercial production after World War II. The 722 was chambered in 222,222 magnum, 243, 244, 257 Roberts, and 300 Savage. It became the model 700 with some minor cosmetic changes. There was nothing wrong with the rifle, there are still a lot of them in service, I prefer them to the 700, just in my opinion. As a side note, they were the first of the round reciever welded recoil lug actions to be made.
 
I have heard of a custom rifle maker looking for 722 short action guns to build custom guns off of..... they were well made and straight.... great gun to keep and use...
 
You should check with your closest authorized Remington gunsmith. There have been issues with the safety, and Remington had an open ended policy where it would repair or replace both the 721 and the 722 safeties. I had my 721 replaced and my son in law had his 722 replaced as well. With the older model safety you had to take the gun off of safe in order to open the bolt. With the newer style safety, you can open the bolt with the gun on safe. I would highly recommend that you have yours looked at.
 
I traded one to a gunsmith friend of mine. He made a 250-3000 out of it. If I see it again, I'll probably buy it back. What a sweet rifle!! Action was smooth as butter. Buy some ammo and go enjoy it.

It is a .222 thanks to everyone for the reply. I only have one complant, I shot it today and if I load it with four rounds in the mag. it will not feed smooth any help?
