Just getting started with yote hunting. I use hand calls and want to add some sound/motion to the decoy gear. Any advice on durability, functionality of the Mojo Super Critter. Also is motion effective during night hunting?
 
Mojo is a good decoy I started out with one many years ago, I only run decoy in daytime hunting, tried one time at night had owls try to take it at times. My neighbor bought a new Mojo first night he used it, big owl took off with it, never did find it.
 
I've used a decoy a time or two. I've seen coyotes hold up because they saw it move. I've never seen one run right up to it like they do on the huntin channel. That could totally depend on where you hunt too, I can't say for sure. But given that I've never seen it help, that's one less thing I carry. I'd rather hide the call and make them come find it.

I wouldn't think it'd make any difference at night but I've never tried it either.
 
Used one to take my first coyote. It was stalking the decoy almost like a cat. I was using a hand call, so it apparently kept it from looking for me. Dumped it with my Benelli. There’s a tiny anecdotal sample of one for you.
 
If i live in an area where coyotes would hang up hundreds of yards out and i/they could see for ever, I'd probably use a decoy.
Where i hunt, by the time you see them, they are in shooting distance. I've had them flair at the sight of a decoy or flat run it over and be gone just as fast.

I opt not to use one for my style of hunting and terrain.

We use this one, it doesn't move but it seems to help, just don't set it up near you!

Just my 2 cents but I don’t think they are necessary. I call a lot of coyotes in and I never use one. Remember the guys you see on tv are not only hunting but also selling product. Even if it’s not necessary they are going to use all their products to make sales.
 
I don’t use a decoy…it has been mentioned before on a different thread… but I have had the motion spook them… first time I thought it was just a fluke… but second time… bad Ju Ju for me… however, when I have a cat appear on one of the game cameras, I use a Turkey feather on a fishing line… easy to carry and seems to keep them occupied for a bit….. but…. only a few kills over the years on cats… but still use the feather..

I've had a mojo critter for a bunch of years and it has been attacked by Owls, and Fishers. Keeps working. I only use it on daytime hunts. Never saw a need at night. I believe on one or two occasions it was useful in holding a coyotes attention for a nice stationary shot. Other times I wish I had not had a decoy out because I could not stop the charge! In both scenarios, the decoy performed well. Sometimes though, it works against you!
 
I still use the original Mojo Critter. It doesn’t play sound but it hits all the right buttons for a predator decoy. I’ve thought about buying a Fuzzy Critter as a backup. It has the tripod vs threaded stake which would make it somewhat easier to use in the winter.

I had an owl fly off with my Foxpro Fusion out in South Dakota! Once he figure out it wasn't going to be that tasty, he dropped it. When it hit the ground, it must have dislodged a couple of the batteries because I couldn't get the call to come on and I had a heck of a time finding it without the sound to lead me to it. Lol. I bet we walked around for almost a half hour before we found it and it was probably 25 yards from it's original location. Lol.
 
Did it work after that? Never had one taken, had owls and hawks fly over and some land by them, I always just mute it if they get close that usually makes them leave, and always stop the decoy.
 
I like a decoy, separate from a caller, I get it high off the ground so the motion doesn't surprise a coyote. I've had coyotes leap 4ft off the ground and grab a decoy and some sit on the ground under it and stare at it. Last year I had a coyote stare at a decoy while I cleared two misfires and a stovepipe, he was 28 paces from me, I killed him.

I like decoys, but I'd never get to ne attached to a caller, decoys are inexpensive. I modify them to my needs. .I've never found a need to be able to control a decoy, I just turn it on and leave it run. I do like decoys that run continuously, not stop and start but they work.

Decoys TIP of the Month

Packing around a placing a decoy. Another thing I've found that decoys can surprise and spook coyotes if they start spinning in their face. I like to place mine high so they can see them from a distance I convert a trekking/snowshoe pole to a decoy holder and they are very versatile not only...

Owls will try during the day too! Barred owl attacked my critter on a day set a few yeas back. Grabbed ahold and was biting the topper while on the ground. Guess it didn’t like synthetic fur flavor and let go and flew off. You can see its wing marks in the snow.

I had a mojo critter, shoot probably 8 years ago now. I made the mistake of setting it out at the edge of the cover on my first ever coon hunt. I had a 22 rifle and that coon came running so fast that i couldn't even see it in my scope. He bulldozed the decoy at full speed, turned around, grabbed it in its mouth like a dog, and ran off into the briars with it. Never did find it or get a shot off

Havent used a decoy since, I considered the Fox Jack a few times but i dont want the same to happen to my call.
 
I've used the Mojo Critter 2, a motion rabbitt decoy (can't remember who makes it) and a turkey feather on a stick. They all hold a coyotes attention, and I have killed coyotes with all of them. I have also killed lots of coyotes without a decoy. For me it comes down to "do I want to carry extra equimpent and take time to set it up or not".
Like the candy bar ad says, sometimes I'm a nut and sometimes I'm not.
 
I’ve used motion decoys on daytime calls. I’ve seen times where a coyote was not sure if he would come into range, but when they got close enough to see the motion decoy, they were committed. That decoy has helped me kill some coyotes and I don’t think it ever is a negative. I place the decoy next to my foxpro. And I have not used a decoy when night hunting.
 
I've tried the critters and call mounted decors on icotec, foxpro, and lucky duck calls. When they work, they are awesome. I've seen it cause coyotes to hit the afterburners, then nothing will stop them until they run it over. I’ve seen it cause them to lay down 300+ yards away and just watch. They are all different, and their responses are different. I think if they are coming to prey distress, and you can put it somewhere that they can't see it clearly from a half mile out, it can be useful, but sometimes it won't. I honestly haven't run one in at least 4 years.
