Moly or HBN bullet coating

I was wondering is anyone uses HBN for coating bullets. I know several use moly. The HBN is "supposed" to be a little less messy, or at least shows up less. David Tubb pushes it but it could be just something to make money on. Also they say it doesn't combine with other things to be corrosive! Anyway anyone with knowledge about this. I would hope it would act like moly and provide a small velocity boost as well as allow more shots between cleaning!
Thanks in advance!

I can tell you that it is slicker than snot and REAL easy to work with. No mess at all.

I have a bunch of bullets plated with hBN, but have not conducted tests with them yet. The bullets are so slick when they come out of the tumbler that they are hard to hang on to.

If you are going to try hBN, shoot me a pm and I'll tell you the cheapest way I found to get it without buying a ton or shipping it from Canada.

I just uploaded a good bit of data for the 6x45 with HBN coated bullets in the Reloading section. Cornstalker is correct when he says this stuff is slicker than snot. It makes the bullets quite challenging to hold on to. I have not noticed a reduction in pressure between coated and non coated bullets with HBN in my particular barrels with a given powder charge. As always, start low and work up. The big bonus I have noticed is a substantial increase in shots between cleanings. The ease of cleaning is also nice. I now clean after 200-250 rounds when shooting p-dogs. A typical cleaning involves a couple wet patches (Butches Bore Shine), a couple dry patches and one final patch with isopropanol and HBN. No fouling shots needed.

Quote:1st: I still shoot Barnes BLUE bullets.

I really liked that XLC coating. Didn't foul at all. I still have close to 50 rounds of 7mm Rem Mag loaded up with the 160's.

Don't care for the moly goo in the barrel.

When I find something wrong with shooting moly'ed boolits, I guess I'll have to try some of that hBN stuff! The hBN coating process is much more involved than moly coating, and I kinda like seeing the visual confirmation of a good moly job.

For me, this the most tedious step of moly coating boolits.

I dont know for sure if hBN is 'better' than moly, so I'll just keep on living in ignorant bliss.
One thing though, moly boolits are waaaaay cooler lookin'!!!

knockemdown, what is your particular coating process, if you don't mind divulging the secrets.
Thanks as always

Degrease bullets
throw 'em in a tumbler bowl
Add a pinch of moly powder
Turn the tumbler ON

Go watch "The Voice" on DVR

Turn tumbler OFF
dump out bullets
polish 'em up in an old t-shirt

the hardest part is keeping the boolits from slipping out of your fingers when you're seating them...
