Monnshiners

I've been watching this show now for a second season. I just can't see how these guys on TV have not been busted by the Feds. Maybe it's all fake.

It is fake. The producers made sure that they are never actually shown making any shine or with a complete still. You cannot film yourself breaking the law and get by with it simply because it is a tv show! Like so many reality shows, this one is pretty much scripted out. Except for Tickles lines, as I doubt that he can read!

Actually at my local Packy. They have a bottle of moonshine. It's in a clear bottle. There is a legit maker that appeared on the show, and I think it was his product I found at the store. I might by the bottle this weekend and see how it is.

Never tried it before. Is it smooth or does it burn going down.

Never tried this particular one myself, they have only been in business for a year or so.

In the past I have had some that went down smooth where other was burn from the start. I guess it all boils down to who makes it.

You can buy Everclear in a liquor store

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everclear_%28alcohol%29

I've had it as well as a few homemade shines. Most were nasty and I can say that with conviction because I drink 99% of liquor straight. I don't like mixed drinks.

In Alaska you can get Hyderized at the glacier bar with Everclear.

When I was in South Africa, the locals brought out a clear bottle that was wrapped in barbed wire.

I think moonshine is legal everywhere.
They're just supposed to pay all the taxes on it and have
a permit or license, etc..

Some moonshine is real good and smooth.
Most is not.

I'm with Redfrog, I drink everything straight, don't even
want any ice in it.

Just need to find the right shiner but I wouldn't go around
asking folks about moonshine as some get rather touchy about
those kind of questions.

The problem with most shine is, it is not aged at all. Smoothness in any whiskey, can be related to what it's made of, but typically has a great deal more to do with the aging process. Most distillers use charred oak barrels for aging, as the charcoal in the charred barrel filters out impurities that impart the bitter flavor, and they give the whiskey it's brown color. Once any alcohol enters the glass bottle, the aging process ends; there is no charcoal there to further filter out the impurities, aging ceases. So sitting a bottle on your shelf for 40 years, waiting on it to age, isn't making it better.

Does it burn going down? It's been my experience that most shine is called sipping whiskey for a reason. You take a big swallow, and you'll be hanging off the porch gasping for air, like you've been kicked in the nuts. Eyes watering, nose running, slobber running off your tongue. Do not believe that tip the jug up and knock back 3 - 4 big gulps, straight out the still BS you see on TV; that isn't shine they're drinking. Brandy you might get away with it, Rye whiskey maybe, as it is a bit smoother, but most corn whiskey will take your breath for long enough that you'll think you're going to pass out before you can breath again.

Best I ever had, was double filtered through a charcoal trickle filter bed, rather than aging in a barrel. The charcoal was made from Apple wood. That stuff would burn a pretty blue flame for quite some time if you poured a teaspoon full in an ashtray, but it tasted like watered down apple juice. Absolutely insane!! No hint of alcohol at all, no bite, no bitter flavor, just tasted like watered down apple juice. It was downright scary!!

As for the show... Tickle's Takes are too much. Been about in tears on a few of those. I know several rednecks just like him!

Most moonshiners can't let it age very long.
It goes straight from the still into the bottle. Most of
that is like drinking rubbing alcohol.

Kind of funny, we go to auctions and every so often there will
be a still at the auction. They usually go pretty high.

When we went to Gatlinburg Tenn last summer and along the Strip they had a a business there that sold Moonshine,Regular and Apple flavored, they were suppose to have some with cherries in it but the FDA was calling it a Food Product and I guess they had to go thru some red tape to try selling it like that? They had some Old cars and Trucks in there some guy would work on as Customers walked around and they had different T-shirts and clothes in their Store too.

We were allowed to try out small samples...even at little amounts it pretty well took Your breath away, but was good tasting and addictive!I saw some the other day at a Gas/Convience Store back here in Missouri and they had the jars of Moonshine full of pretty red cherries in it!

Watch the Movie Lawless, its based on Moonshiners and was suppose to be a true story?...pretty rough Movie/lots of fighting and blood,so don't say I didn't warn You! LOL

Shine really depends on who is making it. The stuff at the liquor store says moonshine but in reality is pretty far off of what anyone would make with a still. The show actually shows a lot of the stuff and processes to make the shine so from that point it is fairly interesting but still it is a scripted show. Anyone can own and possess a still it is just the distilling of spirits without you atf license that will get you.

The best I ever had was rotten.
My drinking buddy and I had to take turns holding a gun on each other just to drink it.

Actually in many states you can legally own and operate a still, up to so many gallons, for personal use. Same as brewing your own beer, or making your own wine. Where the tax permit comes in, is offering it for sale/distribution to anyone else.
