I dispatched 3 today between 1:00 and 5:00 PM despite a gusting 25 MPH wind. The temperature only reached a high of 61, BUT the sun was out! All shots with my Mini-Mauser in .223 and Douglas barrel, reloaded ammo using IMR 4895 (its all I have at the moment).
The first two were taken on the edge of a harvested bean field as the GHs moved from the east fencerow and out into the field (west) and into the sun.
The first one was ambushed from a hide at about 50 yards as he was spotted at 500 yards, he went back into the brush, and I took up a position in the weeds at the field edge 50 yards north from his exit point (distance was chosen due to the wind)
He came back out in about 20 minutes, same entrance path as the exit of course, and the bullet used was a 55 gr. Hornady SX softpoint.
GH #2 was taken per the same strategy further south down the same fenceline at 2PM; bullet used was the 45 gr. Speer SP...I am liking these bullets a lot. Range was about 80 yards, and a lull in the wind when I fired.
GH #3 was on a different fenceline sheltered from the wind by a woods, just prior to 5 PM, and distance about 70 yards with the 45 gr. Speer. Again, great bullet performance as the GH never moved after the hit.
Weather here will be cold and lousy from tomorrow until Sat.
Hunt where you are if the sun is out and temps of 60 or better!
