i live in south carolina, and my dad is a beef cattle farmer, and he has killed 3 black coyotes. i don't have pictures of them, wish i had took some, but i have seen them with my own eyes, and they are definetely black, some more so than others.
I've seen a pair(male & female) of fairly dark or pretty much black coyotes for a little over a month now but their puppies are just as light and pale colored as they could get so explain that!
I'm from a small town in Mississippi and know one knows nothing about coyotes around here and i guess thats why theres quite many of them around here but im learning from you guys and im getting better starting to call more in its just that something always goes wrong lol. So the reason i mentioned small town is that ppl around here are not educated on coyotes and theyve all voiced there opinions on this matter of 50 to 60 pound coyotes and some believe that it could be mixed with german sheperd, but i have know idea.

From the first post

Genes for melanism were probably passed to some hybrid offspring which , in turn, became a part of the gene pool of the present interbreeding genepool
Which means, those pups now carry both the dark gene and the light gene. If you don't kill all those pups this fall, their litters could have a mix of both dark and light pups. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Heres a pic of a very large [dirty Black]coyote. He's pushing 50lbs, estimated. 1st time I seen him, was getting up out of a grassy draw, around 70yrds away.[Didn't have permission, on that land @ that time]. I do now /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Above pic was taken Winter snowfly 03-04. This was the second & last time I seen him. He's standing @ the 3/8th mile from me.
