Mosquito creek coyote hunt

Who all is going to the mosquito creek coyote hunt in PA this year? It's Feb.22-24, prize money is supposed to be even higher this year. Good luck to all who is going

I guess I will go, not looking forward to it... it is fast becoming one of the highest money, and terrible run hunts I have ever entered. The club is now at over 6000 members and has stopped even giving out a few bushel of corn to the members that show up to help feed the game.... they now make you buy a card for the corn as well.... for the incredible amount of money they take in, they are doing less and less and the members never get to hear where the money has gone.

If I make it up to sign up tomorrow fine, if not that will be fine too. I hunt every weekend weather permiiting anyway. Don't need a reason. It really wouldn't bother me to see it go by the wayside. Turns everyone into competitive idiots. I have heard a couple fellers complaining about people hunting before the Mosquito. Seems they don't appreciate others "messing" with THEIR coyotes before the hunt. I don't like what it is doing to otherwise nice people. The hunt is supported by hunters statewide, and beyond. I don't see anything being done with the proceeds to better the state as a whole. A pile of corn on the floor of the garage doesn't impress me much.I think they could do a little more for the hunters of the state with some of the moneys taken in. How about using a little to lobby for legalizing AR type rifles for predator hunting in PA? There is a nobel cause. Or, at the very least, pay more places in the contest. Spread it out a little more. The big first place money is turning it into a less than honorable affair to say the least. Cash crop coyotes, whoda thunk it.

I live down in the Berks county area and planning on hunting around the Blue Mountain area. I've been after a coyote for some time always traveling up to Clinton County and never having any success when I'm up there. I've had more responses to my calling down south here.

I agree totally.... do something with the money... the club could basically run on its own with the money from the bar, food, and the guys who pay a membership just to go there for that and the range... but when you are talking about ten dollars for membership and they have over 6,600 members and 3800 people who payed to compete in the hunt... the club keeps 2.00 of every hunt registration as well.... so at 0ver 70,000 dollars a year i would expect more....

O... I beg to differ a little here guys.... The Mosquito Creek Sportsman's Club pours a ton of money back into the environment... They have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on lime projects that have done wonders with polluted streams/soil in that region.... They promote an untold number of youth field days, plant food plots for wildlife, stock streams and so on......and so what if they make a buck or two...they work hard to put this hunt together...

Sure there are some bad apples that sign up for the hunt and I think they should try to curb some of the cheating, but I think the good out ways the bad.

One of the big problems with the Mosquito Creek Club is that they have (and may still have) employees that steal them blind. More consideration may need taken in just who they hire as employees.

Dave,

I agree they do a lot of things... but many other clubs do them as well and have 20% of the income that they have.

ok so lets have a few ideas that might curb the cheating aspect of it? I personally seen several vehicles out thursday evening just after dark and could hear calling when I stopped .... were they just guys who like to hunt yotes and happen to be out in a spot I have hunted many times this year and never seen anyone else out, on the same night the hunt starts? no way!! not trying to ruffle any feathers but there is no way of stopping this... with this much money involved many cheat.

Another problem I had started at the Andrew Lewand seminar when one of the spokesman for the club and his wife and son were there talking to Andrew, his father and myself along with many others who were there and she proudly was informing all of us how the Pa Game Commission had stocked 2000 grey wolves in Pa..... I have always been told there is no point in being stupid unless you show it.

Will I continue to be a member and enter the hunt, yes... only because of the money, will I cheat to win it? NO I am not the best caller in the world, but I get more than my fair share... and it is my reputation both as a custom call maker, and a member of a large ProStaff to play by the rules.

Cheating for the cash prize is primarly why the Bark At The Moon's contest(Andrew's) is strictly awards at the end of the hunt. All the money taken in gets spent on door prizes so even if you don't harvest a critter you still have a darn good chance in taking home a new call or two at the check in. A contest should'nt be about the money, it should be a gathering of buddies that love the same sport; and yea, bragging rights for a year /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif All these big cash contests bring out the worst in everyone. I am in one now that pays out $1,000 for the biggest coyote harvested over a month period. I think this will be my last year entering that one too. Don't get me wrong a $1,000 payout at the end of the season would be great to help offset the gas money spent from it all but you wont find me lowering myself to the cheating level.

177 coyotes was the final count.... 50.2 lbs was the largest but when I called they were not able to tell me if it was called or ran with dogs....

I hear ya 454 shooter. I have been to meetings when they couldn't give the treasurer position away. Too much baggage attached to it. Oh well, if you have enough money, someone will try to take it.

454 how do you know this??? I think when they use to hand ya a bag of cash it might have happened???? but I think this has changed....the IRS isn't that slow....sure there are ways around it...but why take a chance. I know some members at this club and they are good people. The money that they put back into the environment far exceeds all the other clubs combined....I know the other clubs very well and they do great things also.... thats what it is all about.....not too sure about the grey wolfs....but I hope she is correct...more fun for me. bragN rights or $8K... Ill take the $8K.... As far as cheating... I dont think there is a great deal of it, by majority most people are pretty honest....one way to curb it is to use a polygraph...some of the bigger hunts in the west use this method. Mosquito Creek, St Mary’s and Sigel Sportsman Clubs do a great job with their hunts...win win situation for all in my opinion!!!!!!!

I am at the club pretty often, using the range and such, but mainly because I HAVE to be a member to enter the hunt... which i do not have a problem with, but spreading rumors and lies is not the way to promote your club or to encourage more members. I donated a bunch of custom calls and lanyards last year, they wanted them there so the people signing up could see them, I took them down and after that they were thrown in a bag in the back room and never seen again till I got there at the end of the contest... and asked where they were at because many of the winners were leaving without getting their prizes... I still have no idea if they ever recieved them.... to me this was very poor handling.... it is little things like this that go a long way toward forming an opinion about the club.

I was not asked this year for any contribution, or I would have still given some items for the hunt. I would also like to see the hunt divided equeally between callers and houndsmen... will that ever happen no.... I think it would actually increase the numbers of hunters and members for the club, since most of the callers I talked with are considering this to be their last year..... the way I hear it right now one group running dogs took 13,000 dollars for 1st and 2nd place. I see no reason why you can not divide this money 50/50 first place was 8000. if split 4,000 would still be one heck of a payday no matter if you are running dogs or calling.

wow that is alot of money for one group to take home!! just one more reason to not do the hunt next year. plus there were so many people around me it was like deer season at night time. the only way ill sign up is if the split the money both ways but like you said that will probaly not happen

They have a lock on being the highest paying hunt in the state. I think they figure the huge first place money is what makes it such a hit. They can divide the purse between calling and dogging, or stick it in my opinion. How many of you fellers know that a couple of the key members in the club, local boys, are houndsmen? I stood and talked to one of the founding fathers of the hunt 2 years ago. He and his son, along with friends of his son, maintain no less than 13 hounds. They run them hard up there. They start 3 dogs on a track, then add more as needed until they bay the coyote. No less than 9 in the truck at the start of any given nights hunt. Unless he was pulling my leg. Why would they want to give up $4,000 to keep us callers happy? I may check out the Cresson Sportsmans hunt. The Mosquito is turning into a circus.

I have had it with Misquito coyote/dog hunt....you can not compare dogs chasing VS calling. Calling is way tougher and more skill than 30 men and 45 dogs chasing.

They need to change or create catagories of dogs and calling..I know it is imposible to seperate and proove if it was called or chased.

I know this will fire people up but the amount of money will get alot of people trying anything to get the $$$$.

I am sure the dog people will talk about the skill and control of chasing the coyotes and baying them up, which is fine. That is why I will not compete. Look at the last 2-3 years dog chasing or running has won it.

I know it is luck and scouting, but if I hunted in an area when the coyotes have been chased with dogs they will not calll or respond to my call. They will be hiding and not moving.

Just saying how I feel. Teeny

and if they truely wanted to get into a divided class many of the high paying hunts in other areas subject winners to polygraph tests... keeps things on a bit more even playing field. I would be happy if they kept their money and host one in the fall that is calling only.... but that as well will never happen... I am still considering a calling only hunt for Pa for next year, it will be more money to enter than 10.00 and will be only in certain areas where everyone has the same chance... maybe a few of our large state forest and game lands here in central Pa.... and I am going to check into any and all ways of stopping the hound hunters. Please fellas dont get me wrong, I would eventually like to add hounds as another method I as well can use... but callling is calling and I will not give that up... just tired of kicking a dead horse at these contests.

Can it be done... yes... will I still enter...yep... do I enjoy it... not really... but its better odds than me winning the lottery.

the one thing that i wouldnt like about a fall hunt is that it would fall in some line with deer season and you know it would give people a perfect oppurtunity to go out and poach a monster buck that they have been watching. i think it would be nice to have a summer, late spring hunt, or even an early fall hunt where it wont run with deer season. sure the fur isnt is nice but who cares. it would still be fun to get out there. and im sure in the summer the houndsman would have a lot more trouble running there dogs with the warmer weather. just a few thoughts for hopefully some future hunts.
