Mossberg 535 Turkey Thug shotgun for calling Coyotes

Shooting coyotes with a shotgun is nothing like shooting at turkeys with a shotgun.

Regular pump and semi-auto shotguns with 26" to 30" barrels are much better for shooting at moving targets.

3" number 4 buckshot is a good coyote load.

Shotguns I belive are needed when calling coyotes as alot of times you get doubles and triples and one is always close for a shotgun. The turkey thug is a pump shotgun with a 22 inch barrel. It would be good to 50 yards. With a rifle only you most likey only get one.

I guess I didn't make my reply clear on short barreled turkey shotguns for hunting coyotes.

Turkey shotguns are made to shoot at a turkey that is standing still.

Regular shotguns with 26" to 30" barrels are made for shooting at moving or flying objects. Most of the coyotes that I have shot with shotguns over the years are moving. Some coyotes can be moving at close to 40 mph.

If you plan on shooting at two and three coyotes at a time at up to 50 yards away with a shotgun there are much better choices than a pistol gripped, pump, short barreled turkey shotgun.

I think it's vastly overpriced for what it is: A Mossberg pump with a camo paint job and a plastic pistol grip.

Personally, I like the low-end autoloaders better and they're in the same price category.

Take a look at the Stoeger 3000. What's not to like? Camo version is available, 3 inch mag, set of choke tubes included, Benelli-style inertia action, and priced in the same category as the Mossberg.

I have the older Stoeger 2000 auto and it works great for coyotes. It's also a guilt-free gun in terms of I can use it, abuse it, and I don't worry about it. It gets cleaned once a year, takes a likcin' and keeps on tickin'.

Whatever autoloader is mentioned, somebody is bound to come on blathering about how it jams and is unreliable. Usually that someone doesn't actually own that shotgun, he's just "heard" that it jams from his brother-in-law's cousin's father-in-law's neighbor who knows a guy who owns one.

So back here in Reality Land, I've cycled hundreds of rounds of various types through my Stoeger 2000 without a single jam. Certainly, it has racked off many 3 inch mags at coyotes, in cold and wet weather without an issue of any sort. I personally know one other guy who owns a Stoeger 3000 and his experience has been the same.

Something to consider, anyway.

I have a 535 that I picked up used.
I also put on a BlackHawk recoil absorbing 6 position stock. I like the theroy, I have paterned it with #4 buck and a Dead coyote choke, and it was great pattern shooting at the shotgun range.
I then tried the Hornady load and liked the results better. I like the short barrel and its light and i don't feel bad treating it bad (just a product of Coyote hunting with two guns)
I even shot a bobcat broadside at about 10yrds and despite the 25+ holes in the pelt. It was fine.

Now the bad news.
I have an issue with the gun and despite repeated cleaning and attempts at trying to figure out what the issue is.. The gun shoots one shot, then won't fire the second. I have to pump it to the stops, and then it takes a few times. I shoot, pump, then nothing, not even a click, pump again, until the gun fires. It's not re-engaging the firing pin spring or something (best guess)
I wish it would work every time, like my 870's do, but a gun that i can't count on for the second shot is worthless to me.
Just me experience with the gun, hope if you get one, you have different results.

Yes it did. I bought it off Gun Broker, and have had issues with consistency since the first day.

There are some occassions that it works fine. But, we all work so hard to get the animals in close, especially close enough to shotgun, and If I can't trust it for the second shot, I am not happy.
