Anybody use this gun for turkeys. If so do you use 3 1/2 inch shells. I shot one today and it kicks pretty good I got a bruise on my face and shoulder. And I think my filling came out in one of my teeth. I've shot a lot of guns before but this is by far the hardest kicking one yet. Haven't shot a ten gauge yet

Do you REALLY need a 3 1/2 shell? IMO a good pattern with a 3 in shell up to 40yds is fine by me. I always want to se how close I can call them in .

I have been running one for 3 years now. Mine patterned best with rem 3 1/2" #4's. I love recoil so I dont notice it, patterned good enough to be GTG at 60yrds.

I have an 835 and turkey hunt with 3 1/2" 2oz #5s with a dead coyote howler choke or kicks goblin' thunder choke. Yeah, they're pretty brutal but you're only gonna shoot it once. Have killed birds near 60 yards with it.

I've always said they should ship those 835's with a mouth guard instead of a lock. People would get way more use out of them..

Used my 835 for one season, traded it in for a semi 935. Much better....
Good idea on the mouth guard, coulda used it.

I got an 835 long ago when they first came out. I shot it for years and killed lots of turkeys, some coyotes, quail, ducks etc. with it. It is not the smoothest pump, but it always worked for me. I had to send it back to Mossberg after many years to have some work done on it, as the bolt was sticking when cycled to the rear. They replaced the bolt with a new one at no charge and I had the gun back within 10 days total time. Mine does not have a ported barrel like the new ones. The porting should help with the recoil, but do not buy this gun if you are recoil sensitive.

I have since also bought a 935 and I like it better than I ever did my 835.

These are both great guns for a fair price and unbeatable factory service.

I've killed quite a few turkeys shooting 2 3/4" shells in both a 500 and 835.I use 3" shells the last couple years since wally world had a great sale on them.I'll never use 3 1/2" for turkeys.I tried them with 4 buck for coyote's but didn't much care for the kick.

I have a 535 shotgun and put the Blackhalk stock on and it eats up the recoil and the gun now is a 6 position stock and kicks the same as the standard shells and throws more lead down range.

My bud has one in camo. He used to use it exclusively when we turkey hunted northern Michigan. He has since switched to a Benelli Nova, as has my other bud. I believe he only runs 3" shells out of both guns, as does my other bud, and myself........

Welcome to the 3 1/2" 12 gauge pump. They kick in any make. 3 1/2 is not needed for turkey. It is helpful with flying geese at nose bleed heights though.

Shoot 3" in you Mossberg and you will like it fine. Otherwise get a semi-auto.

I must say that is pretty impressive.

I have used 3" Win Supremes and/or Fed Premium for a long time now and they work just fine. My turkey gun does not take 3.5" shells. Really not sure if I would use them or not if I could.

I'm sure recoil would be stout, but I touched off a bunch of 3.5" 10 gauge slugs (766 grain I believe)and lived to tell about it.

I won't lie, the 10 ga. slugs were rather brutal, even for me. Gun was light, and recoil pad was old. My bud fired one round and he looked like he was gonna start crying

I bought a 835 the first year they came out and still have it, I originaly got it for geese to shoot 3 1/2" T's, shot a couple of truckloads of geese with it and a few turkey but only used 3" shells for turkey, the 3 1/2" turkey loads will get your attention

Got a couple of em. Been shooting coyote fox and cats with one since they first came out. Forget the 3.5's. You dont need em imo. And yes, they kick like [beeep] in any pump.

Even though the 835 is one of the best shotguns I ever had,
I too am in the 3" club todays shells and guns are great...
the 1st 835 I had put 16 #4s in a pepsi can at 55 yds.

but they aint "that" bad kicking.. the worst I had was when
H+R came out with their 3.5 single shot light as a feather turkey gun in full camo....
It broke down when I shot it, I thought it broke my face...
1 shell is all I put throught it, sold it next day....

Thanks for all the replies guys. I'm gonna try some 3 inch shells here soon to see how I like them. And beagled that's impressive at 45. I get maybe 15 to 20 pellets at that distance in a 10 inch circle. Maybe I need to try some diferrent brands of ammo out anyways only tried three so far.
