Mossberg AR 15 Hunter loud safety

Just got a Mossberg AR 15 in .223 camo. I like the gun, BUT when pushing the safety down (off) it makes a very loud click, that a coyote could hear from 50 yds. Any body experience this and/or know how to "fix" it? THANKS

Yup.

Take off your pistol grip, pull out the safety detent plunger spring, and the safety detent plunger. Use sandpaper or a fine file to VERY SLIGHTLY round the tip of the detent plunger.

Pull out the safety selector also. You'll see the track and detent holes that engage the plunger. Use a round file to very slightly radius the edges of those holes on the track side (you could do it with an engraving point in a dremel, but I use a round file). That'll let the plunger ride more smoothly, make it easier to click the safety on and off, and help you operate it more quietly.

Just "ride" the safety slowly to the off position. They all make some noise! My current safety came with my new Ruger Elite 452 trigger and while it is MUCH quieter than my old mil spec, it still makes some noise if you just flip it to the fire position.

As has been stated, riding safety down eliminates the click. If you have short fingers, as I do, and cannot do so without repositioning your trigger hand on grip, you might give the Rock River star safety a try. This safety is a lot easier to reach than the mil spec safety.

When pushing down, also press towards the middle of the rifle. Do this all the way down, which would be "riding" it down. This pressure will make the sound "dull". Cheap and easy with some practice.
