I have a mossberg 395k bolt shotgun. Is it safe to shoot 3 inch mag shells( no. 4 bk)? The old adds say they could shoot magnum shells.

What a great old gun. Grew up with one in a 20 gauge until I graduated to a 12 gauge semiauto when I was 12.

There weren't any 3" shells around when those were made I don't think. I had one that was well used when I got it, that was about 1963. They used to make what they called magnum shells that were low base cases. They were different from standard high base stuff. The only difference you could tell on the outside was low base shells had high brass on the head and high base had low brass. The high brass suported the case head.

I had one and it is the only gun I ever sold. I named it mule kick and for a reason. it did hold the tightest pattern for turkeys that any one ever saw. As far as I know I was the only one to pull the trigger of this gun more than once. it was a great gun if you wanted to get a bad case of the flinch.

Try Google and you will find information on your shotgun.
