Mossberg MMR Woes - Need Troubleshooting Advice Please

I ran both of mine at the range today w/50&55g vmax to 400 yds. 100yds both right at .500", 200yds 3 shots touching was at .700" overall, 400 yds all were in a 3" spot. Both loads shoot the same.
Smesh, it has to be a scope/ base issue.

Eeny, meeny, miney, mo....

I'm going to choose carefully since I don't really want to fart around with another coyote scope if it proves to be the issue, so I'll just leave whatever I choose on there. Thing is the Nikon Tactical has to go in for electronics. The dial is about ready to fall off. The NF is overkill. The others have too high powers. I have a few more but they're spoken for. I might stick the Kahles multi-zero on there and mount it as low as possible. I have yet to try that scope and it has the ability to sight in different ranges with scales anda positive return to zero. Only 3-9x though.

I'm thinking this is a barrel/ barrel nut issue. If you know any guys with experience with ARs, I'd hit them up and see if they can check your torque on the barrel nut. Specs should be between 35-80 ft/lbs per USMC guidlines with reports of better accuracy coming from the lower end of that range.

I'm taking it to Addax Tactical today. It's not far form me. They make custom AR's and were recommended, so hopefully it's something simple like the barrel nut. I sure hope so. My 17 year old is coming from Canada for a visit and I want to take him back to San Carlos Reservation for some coyotes with the AR. It's my only rifle here so far. He killed three coyotes and a Javelina at the PM Hunt there in 2007 when he was 10.

NOT...A...HAPPY...CAMPER.

Addax Tactical's smith says the rifle looks fine, mounts look fine, and barrel nut is not an issue. Says any time he's seen that behavior in an AR it's been the barrel and says it needs to go back to Mossberg. Gonna see if I can pull some strings at Mossberg corporate to see if I can expedite things a bit. I got no where with the office in Texas and it makes no sense to me that if they send them to CT anyway, it would have to go to Texas first.

Every MFG has the occasional product that fails, but it's how they deal with it that counts. I've blown up several scopes from the top brands, so in the end, it's all about warranty and customer service. I really regret not waiting for the Predator Pursuit. I got this rifle a couple of weeks earlier than I would have received the PP, but as it turns out, this rifle has been a paperweight since it arrived.

I'd just see if mossberg will converse with the local guy you went to. He may be able to do the work there with a new barrel. If you like all the other aspects of the rifle, I would just see how much you can get a decent barrel for and move on...jmo.

Already tried two brand new out of the box. The likelihood of that being the problem is probably worse than the odds of getting struck by lightning. Besides, I've broken a pile of scopes and only seen one shoot this bad - a Leupold that had a crushed objective after a horse fell over while the rifle was in the scabbard. That was on a Moose and sheep hunt in Alaska, and it was a frustrating experience. Killed a moose up close on the last day, much smaller than others I saw, and missed a nice Ram at about 50 yards after days and days of climbing. Wasn't the Leupold's fault.

Anyway, I'm not running back to the range and burning more hard to find ammo and time on this rifle. I might try to call one more time and see if they send a barrel out to the smith though. I doubt that will happen.

THE only time i have heard of this problem with an AR ,other than a loose scope, it was a gas/timing issue...basically an oversized gas port/tube for reliable function...but the bolt was not staying locked while the bullet exited the barrel.if your brass is not landing in the same general area, this could be the issue.....other than that ,bad barrel.....i would see if you can send them just the upper..let em check it out.

I have only been shooting with a brass catcher until now, as I plan to reload in the future. Also I've only been shooting at the range where the concrete floor kind of disperses the brass in a wide area, but I'm just going by what the smiths at Addax Tactical told me in San Fernando, and they build and sell custom AR's so I would hope they know. The whole rifle fits in the box best that way, so I'll just send it as is. It's going out today.

I certainly hope Mossberg gets it handled in a timely manner for you. Were you able to ship it directly to CT or did you have to ship it to TX first?

It's all good. They're going to inspect it as quickly as possible. There is still the very remote chance it was two bad scopes in a row. We'll find out soon enough, but I certainly appreciate them expediting things for me to find out.

Well it wasn't the scopes. My MMR has a new barrel. It should be back on Monday or Tuesday if all goes well. Then I'll put it through its paces and report back. I'm told it shoots great now. I'll soon find out.

Much thanks to Mossberg for fixing this up for me in a timely way. GREAT service.

^^ Hey glad to hear that. Now it will shoot like mine!...Darn you got the only bad barrel I thinks.
That was pretty fast CS from them also....no 6 weeks waiting!

Yes they were very accommodating which I greatly appreciated.

I'm anxious to see how it shoots now. I guess I'll give that coyote scope a try after all. I was thinking of switch it out to my Nikon Tactical 2.5-10x but I'll stay with the CS for now.
