About 5 years ago I bought a Gander Mtn clearance 308 Mossberg SSI new for around your price (when sales tax was added). Mine is a decent shooter when it comes to accurary. Only gripe about mine is the trigger pull...too heavy to suit me. Normally I try to do a trigger job when I have this problem. But with the SSI, I've been hesitant to try doing it. Never could find any gunsite posts on exactly how to do a trigger job on a SSI, but recall reading posts from gents claiming to have done it successfuly. Nor could I find any disassembly/reassembly instructions, just parts diagrams. Gave rifle to a gent who's done gunsmithing on the side for 40 years to examine with idea of him doing a trigger job. He will check rifle and then take it to a licensed gunsmith (they are good friends who help each other out) for his advice. Neither had seen one of these SSIs before. Neither wanted to make any attempt on it. By the way, Mossberg only produced the
SSIs for a year or two. Recall a conversation with a Gander Mtn sales clerk who had called Mossberg trying to buy a SSI part, maybe a barrel. Clerk recounted to me, the SSI had sold fairly decently for them and was surprised when Mossberg person informed him rifle was discontinued and all remaining parts inventory and machinery for rifle production had been sold to another company. What company? Gander clerk said, Mossberg person on phone refused to reveal who had bought everything. Later I'd read that maybe the Mossberg Texas plant where Maverick shotguns and etc. are made got the SSI equipment and parts.
Have had some nice comments about the rifle from fellow shooters at range when I've taken it to shoot.
