Mossberg walnut Patriot opinions?

One of the new breed $350 rifles that are here now. Thought one would make a nice back-up/loaner rifle but I know little about them. What say you? Thanks...

I don't know much about them, but I can say as of 5:30 Sunday afternoon I gave one a new home, hopefully its a forever home if it behaves. They were on sale for 239.95. I stopped on my way home just to look at them, and dang it Big R had one in 22-250, I didn't have a 22-250. They let me pull the trigger, seem pretty nice for a 240 dollar gun, must have had a little work done on their display gun, asked if they had one still in the box, she brought it out, opened a trigger pull gauge for me, 2LB 9oz, she said it should adjust down a little more if you want, dang it I'll take it. I have had a 4-12 Leopold LR setting on a shelf for 3 or 4 years so I stuck it on it. Did a little reading on it and found out it is a 1 in 14 twist, not sure about that with the 22" barrel, want to shoot 55gn something's, starting with V-max's, if they don't shoot I have some 53gn match kings, if they don't shoot not sure what I will try, really want the 55 grainers to shoot well. Anyway, I am loading up some barrel break in rounds now and hope to get them shot this Sunday. If I get started early enough I should have a good load worked up and know if it is going to be a shooter or a seller. I'll let you know how it goes.

This was a walnut stock model? Did you know that this rifle goes all the way up to 375 Ruger? Shooting Times gave it a pretty solid review. Nov. 15.......$379.00 at Bass Pro...

I didn't know it went up to 375 Ruger until I got home and started reading up on them, I didn't think to even ask if there was a wood stock option just figure what you see is what you can get for $239.95. I am a wood fan, I think this is the second sync. stock gun I have bought, not that they are bad, I just don't care for the looks of them. I have seen some painted ones that I would love to have but the guys I talk with say a good paint job can cost as much as a good gun. If I would have know when I bought it that there was a wood stock option I would have held off and looked for one of those. There are 11 (I Think) caliber's, youth models, camo stock's, scope packages, several options I found after some research. It might end up being like my .223 handi rifle, good enough to keep around in the pickup or tractor not having to worry about banging it around a little, but bad enough that it doesn't get to go on hunting trip or shot off the bench. Let me give a little background, after I bought my Cooper 204 13-14 years ago (It was the third gun I bought, First was a Ruger 10/22 target that I put a Boyds laminated target stock and a KIDD two stage trigger on, second was my handi rifle, it has always gotten the job done out in the field, but every time I sat down at the bench with it I left disappointed), it has been hard to find a gun that will shoot up to the expectations it has set, I guess that's why they are $1500+. I did buy a 220 Wilson-Arrow built by Dave Tooley that has lived up to my expectations for a little less then $600, (have to love a custom gun someone buys that doesn't reload, finds out custom ammo is super expensive and practically gives the gun away), and have a couple Remington 722 actions with different barrel makers that set a pretty high bar also. Anyway a tractor gun is kind of what I am expecting, but we will see Sunday. I will figure out how to post pic's of some target and put a little information out about them good, bad or indifferent. I know there are a lot of guys out there that can't afford the Cooper's or custom build's, heck since my daughter came along 4 1/2 years ago I have felt like a $2000 or even a $1000 gun isn't a particle option for the next several years, that's why I bought this one. I want to know if any of these super cheap sale gun's are worth recommending. If they fail I should be able to get my money back out of them, who knows. If the MSU Bobcat's did have a home game Saturday (my daughter loves going to their games for some reason, I am a little more of a UM Griz fan myself) I would know a lot more about it's possibility's by the end of the day Sunday. Sorry I feel like I am Dragging this out way to long, Chat with you guys later

I bought that Walnut Patriot in 308 caliber. I own any gun I want and am amazed at the quality that the Mossberg folks have packed into a $400 rifle...
It will make great loaner rifle for my pesky sons in laws....

Nice,
I got a chance to get a early start with the Mossberg Patriot 22-250 last night. Tuesday night I load 32 Hornady 55 grain SP with 38 grains of hybrid 100V. First I cleaned it, shot 1 cleaned shot 1 cleaned shot 3 cleaned shot 5 cleaned shot 5 cleaned shot 10 cleaned. I know this probably isn't how most guys break in a barrel but it seems to have worked for me in the past. I had it shooting in the middle of paper and height looked good so I shot one more then went and colored a little dot in the corner of the paper and shot the last six at it. Keep in mind these were shot at 45 yard's. 3 of the last 4 touched, one of those 4 was just a bit higher. The 2 higher right shots were the first 2 at the dot. I will get my grouping targets as I call them out and see if I can dial in a load that it will group at 100 yards Sunday with a update on Monday.

Another rifle that will be orphaned soon and there will be no aftermarket and little to no product support.

A friend of mine wanted a first deer rifle for his daughter, and the Mossberg Patriot with the adjustable stock was what he wanted. I ordered him one in 243 and sighted it in. The rifle came with a no name 3X9X40 scope, which I would have promptly tossed, had it been mine. Anyway, the rifle wasn't all that bad looking, nothing high quality, but it wasn't supposed to be. The trigger was very nice, probably the best feature on the gun. He wanted ammo, so I got some of the Hornady Whitetail 100 grainers. I had a little trouble getting comfortable shooting the rifle, because of the short stock and the crappy scope. So, that may have contributed to the results, which were a little disappointing. My best groups ran around 4 inches at a 100 yards, and that's the best I could get it to shoot. To be fair, it might have been mostly me, but I wasn't impressed with the results.

Well Sunday wasn't a good day to take the Mossberg patriot 22-250 out to see what I could get it to do. This should tell the story.

I shot 15 rounds, 5 at 3 targets. Normally I start with my light loads first and work up, but with a little help from my 2 year old boy my bullet tray ended getting reversed on my bench and I shot the heavy loads first. any way here is the target. target 1 5 cold shots, target 2 best 5 shot group, 39 grains of powder, target 3 best 3 out of 5 but worst 5 shot group 38.7 grains of powder. Don 't know, it gave me enough encouragement that I am going to load up 20 more rounds, with 38.7 grains of powder, put my old Leopold 20x on it and see what she will really do.
