Most Accurate .308 rifle around a $1000?

I was considering buying a heavy barreled tactical .308 rifle. I want a gun capable of sub .5 accuracy at 100 yards. A bolt action is what I have in mind. I could come up with another grand but was trying to save some money for good optics. What is your suggestion?

I have a Rem 700 SPS Tactical. Recently printed a 10 shot group (42.3gr IMR 4064/CCI200/Sierra 168 MatchKing) that measured about 0.750". All but two of the shots were touching. I had pulled both of these shots and knew it immediately. The 8 shot group measured 0.567". This is w/ a factory trigger and stock (I bedded the action) using a Vortex 2.5-10X44 PST. Fairly confident w/ a better trigger and stock this rifle would consistantly shoot .5MOA.

Initial load testing using Rem 180gr Corlokts looks as good or better than the Matchkings at 100yds.

By the time I get a decent stock and trigger for it, I'll be setting right at $1K.

For the $$, I think it's a hard rifle to beat. That being said, I'd also take a long hard look at the FN. Looks like they're going for around $1500.

I have a Remington 700 LTR 308, and she shoots really well. If I was to do it over again I would get the 5R remington, just because of the longer barrel.

Remington 700 sps varmint in .308. 500 bucks get rid of the stock and crumy scope that comes with it, upgrade both. Adjust the trigger down to 3 1/2 pounds, use 168gr bullets and you'll be shooting under .5 inch groups all day. Nice thing about the 700's is that you can customize about anything on them and parts are everywhere for them. Just my .02

Savage 10fcp in the choate, HS, or Mcmillan tactical stocks, the McMillan may be more like $1100-$1200 though.

Or, the remmy 5r, I've read hundreds of reviews on this gun, they are simply known as incredibly accurate and beautifully functional guns.

I was all but handing over the $$ for the 5r when I decided instead on the 10 fcp in a choate, it simply came down to a love of the feel of that tactical style stock. It's a cabelas special edition rifle.

This gun meets the accuracy you want with fed gold medal 168's.

Take a look at Steyr rifles, also 2nd the FNH comment above, I have shot one and seen 2 others and factory with 4-500 dollar scopes they were punching ragged holes at 200 and 300 yds all day. never shot the 5r but have heard good things. I have a Tikka Varmint in .308 that shoots under .5 MOA with almost any decent factory load as well.
