Motorcycle communications

I'm soon to be the owner of an older Honda Goldwing. My wife and I will be doing some riding and we want to invest in an intercom/communication system. My Goldwing does not have the built in intercom so we'll need a stand alone unit. I've done some research and don't want to sink a ton of money into this but don't want crap either.

I'm kind of leaning toward a Nady MRC-11X. It has the full duplex intercom, wind resistive mic's and an FRS radio for communicating with other bikes.

My questions are: 1. Does anyone have any experience with this unit and if so, what are your thoughts? 2. Can you suggest another unit that might meet my needs without my having to sell my blood? 3. Can you guide me to a place on the web that might give me more info?

Thanks in advance!

Randy

The system that worked really well for me is to turn my head and hollar really really loud in the direction of whoever is on the back. Keeps the stupid chatter to a minimum. As a matter of fact, I enjoy having a passenger on the ol' Shovelhead so much I completely removed the rear seat. I'd rather ride alone than to have to deal with someone bitching in my ear. Its to hot, I'm cold, Its raining, Hey isn't that a tornado!, Why are you stopping, Why can't we stop, my butt hurts, Ouch! I just got stung by a bee!, Your going to fast, Your going to slow .......... why bother!

But then again you probably have a wife that is willing to talk to you, occasionally touch you, might even brush by you in the hall, she probably even acknowledges your alive .......... If you do your a truly lucky man!

Michael,

Yup, I do have a wife I like to be around. But, I had a trial run with a different one before I got this one. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Michael; /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif You outdone yourself. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Thats the funniest thing I've heard you say and it's the truth! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif
Those comms are good for one thing as far as I'm concerned and thats for playing music. I've got a slap upside the helmet a few times by my wife. Thats communication!

I had an older version of the chatterbox......left a little to be desired.

I kinda LIKE my wife sitting behind me. She usually always has an arm around my waist, leans her chest into my back, rubs on my shoulders occassionally /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif.......Hmmmm, come to think of it, I get a lot of "personal" contact when we ride.......I think I'll get the bike out. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif

Hey Randy,
I've been spending some time on e bay looking at Goldwings, and the Yamaha, Royal Star, I'm not sure if I will ever get one but I like to dream about it.

I'm with Michael, both my softail and my shovelhead have solo seats and drag pipes, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif thats all anyone hears when I'm around. got the wife her own sporty to ride. would rather have her beside me than behind me. don't rush the intercom thing, the next thing you'll be thinking is that a radio would sound cool. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

SHAMELESS

Hidestretcher,

That darned goldwing has all kinds of of backrests and special seating. I don't think I'm gonna get much of that personal contact out of the deal. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Shameless,

The Goldwing has a great radio system on it. How else am I going to be able to hear the "Car Guys" on a sunday morning ride????

Now, if it would ever stop snowing and blowing I'd kinda like to get out on the darned thing!

And, by the by, I did manage to pick out an intercom system. I decided on Motocomm's Audio Boss. It's hard to find reviews on these things. I spent hours on the internet. But, I kept hearing bad things about the nady and chatterbox. This one cost just a tad more but I hope it will be worth it.

I have to stand with Michael on this, been riding for near 40 years near as I can remember, about 30 of it on the same bike. If I need to chat that bad, guess I'll holler too, or stop.

Randy - I have an on going true love hate relationship with my old FLH. She's all mine and I know every nut and bolt on her, heck for most repairs even major ones I don't even have to fish for the right wrenches, my hand falls on the right one by shear muscle memory.

I sorta hate to say it but if you want to pile heaps of trouble free miles nothing will beat the comfort and reliability of a well mantained "Wing" of about any age.

R Buker : Where did You find out any info. on the Motocomm radio that You choose. Who makes it ? I am needing to buy a Dual intercom /CB radio for my Motorcycle also. I have looked at the Kuryakyn Catalog but they are sure proud of them .Thanks Navarro

I searched the internet for "audioboss". I got scattered info from here and there by doing that. A good person to talk to might be "Mike" at www.handsfreedirect.com That's where I bought them through. He seemed to know lots about the various intercom systems. They have a phone number on their web site. Give him a call.

By the way, I got the system last night. Looks like a pretty good one. We'll see how it handles the wind noise. If it does ok there, I'll be very happy with it

R Buker Thanks for the information , I will certainly call him tomorrow ,I had bought one of those Nady kits but it worked fine except it was voice or noise activated and my Harley kept it activated real well those batteries would last about one hour and it was just too many wires hanging everywhere. I would rather just have a plug in for each of us . thanks again Navarro

I don't have any pics of the headsets but here's pics of my new toy.

If you want pics of the intercom system, I can get that too.

I don't care about the IC. I wanted to see the Bike!! NICE!! Ya'll gonna' ride it down here?? I'll ride with you. I know all the good "Biker " hang outs.

It's too damned hot to ride it down there in the summer time and by the time it cools off there, the snow is too deep to ride through up here.... Go figure.

Maybe we'll have to meet in Colorado???!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

But, I'll bet you do know all the good Biker hang outs... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

But, I doubt I'd be able to keep up with you. We'll have to coordinate meeting spots and I'll get there eventually. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
