mountain coyotes ?

As a new member of P.M., I must say I am very impressed with this site. Thanks for having me on board. I'm hoping some of you may have some experience with coyotes in the mountains. I primarily hunt (them) in the lower elevations and desert areas, but, have run across many in the mountains while bow hunting (deer season). My question is-do they stay up high all year? We get mucho snow up high here in utah, and I wonder if there is enough game up there in winter for then to survive or if they migrate down with the deer? Just wondering if it would be futile to try up there this winter. Any input from you all would be helpful. Thanks....Blackrifle

These were shot in January of this year up in the mountains in about 3 feet of snow. I think they will stay up high as long as they have food and water available.
So, where in Utah are you from?
 
That is one cool photo cjg. It is mind blowing that coyotes can move around in those conditions. (I've seen my dog flounder in deep snow). That is incentive enough for me to do some mountain calling this winter though. Thankyou for the reply. By the way I live in Sandy.
 
cjg...My hunting buddy and I have a spot not real far from wellsville that holds lots of coyotes,but, they always hang up on us. I'll drop you a note when we go up there this winter. Maybe a new look will get them to come in.
 
hey how well did those snow shoes work? i ask because i rented some last year for a hunting trip. we were in about a foot of snow and they worked great. i little bit noisey but who knows if the yotes could hear them over my heavy breathing. one thing i did notice is that the jacks were attracted to the sound. i have never seen so many jacks just sit and look at us. the only regret is that i did'nt shoot any of them, because we were being quit trying to sneak in on the yotes. if i had to do all over again & would have probably have gone to prison because of all the blood that would have been visable on the snow. they local law enforcement agency would have thought there was a massacor /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
 
those snow shoes look about 10 times better than the ones i rented. how long does your stand consist of in those kind of conditions. normal conditions 30 minutes but when the snow is that deep one would have to think it will take longer for the yote to get there. am i thinking right?
 
Thanks for the compliment on the snowshoes. We ended up making a bunch the last few years for scouts but that was actually the first trip I ever used them.
Well, that stand we used coyote vocalization for about 40 minutes then got up and moved a few hundred yards and they I got on the rabbit distress and they were both at my feet in a matter of seconds.
