Custom Call Maker
The Western WA Predator Hunter Assn. guys asked me to do a presentation on Cougar Calling. It'll be open to the public, and any of you guys in the area are welcome to sit in. It's Sunday, November 14th, Starts at Noon. Conference Room at Cabela's in Lacey.

The seminar will be mostly stories, photos, video, and the talking points will revolve around Frequently Asked Questions. I have a good list, but if you have other questions, Please feel free to post here. I'll mesh them into the program.

Might do video or audio of it, so longer distance guys can partake as well. Post up some questions!

Looking forward to it!

So far we've got; Decoys, Sequences, Cold Calling, Time between located and calling, Specific Sounds/types during stand...

I'm probably going to do an audio of the meeting and post it on my website. So anyone will be able to click and listen after the fact.

Let me know what you think.

I'd be interested in hearing or seeing a video of it for sure. I'd be there for the real thing if I could.

I have one major question: When you cut a track and follow it, what do you look for as an indicator that it is time to set up and call? Geographic features? Patterns in the tracks? Cover/layup type areas?

At least bootleg a cassette for me. I'd buy it!!

Life cycle, habits, personality traits... biology
Vocals and other animals
Decoys
Sequences & reasoning for them
Cold calling vs hot calling percentages
Usefullness/Consequence of specific sounds i.e. Large Prey, or Small prey. Whistles vs Aggressive.
Calibers/Loads
When to set up on a track you're following

Please continue to suggest topics. Lots of these will overlap, lots will be answered by asking other questions. I'll have others that may or may not be suggested.

This sounds like a winner ...... and I live "closer" ....

...... looks like I'd have little or no excuse?

I have one for the topic: "When to set up" .......

....... When you are circling and it's tracks are over the top of yours now!!

GAME ON!

Best regards and very good idea

I'll shake up my buddy and see what he thinks!

Steve,

Though I won't be able to make it to the seminar either, I would like to know more about how to set up your "stand" to best utilize hilly or mountainous terrain (especially arid/open terrain). For example, is it any more productive to call downhill vs. uphill? Do they generally try to get above the caller for a better view? Do they care much about wind/scent? Is it best to try to call them over or around a terrain feature so they won't spot your approach to the stand? How far are they typically willing to travel to get to the caller? How would you set up in a typical high desert canyon and where would you be looking to spot their approach? Thanks alot - John

Talked to my Cousin in Florida today, Gonna talk to him again next week, didn't have alot of time this round, but he told me some pretty unnerving stories about the Florida Panthers he's been dealing with. He ran the same cat out of a pasture with a pickup truck, twice... In One Night!!! The land owner had to call in the Feds and have it trapped and relocated... to somebody else's ranch!

Brings up another point I'm going to cover, "Changing typical Cougar behaviors, overpopulation, loss of hunting pressure, and other causes for those changes."

If time allows, I'm also going to cover "Attributing rational thought processes to a Lion, or any other animal for that matter." It's very applicable in discussing certain behaviors and traits.

And, I'm going to have a book review and recommended reading list. I haven't read everything, but I have read several dozen books on the Puma. I'll give my opinions... tell you what I think is worth your time.

Any other ideas?!?!?

I went back to two old call-in locations and interviewed myself telling the story. Ended up with a few "don't do what I did here..." tips too. Will be showing those clips at the meeting.

Also went to the Game Farm and interviewed three Cougars on video! (Actually got three "whuff-rumble/purr" sounds from a cat that hasn't given me anything before.. .they'll be in the library someday!) I'll have those clips to show too. All raw video.

Also if time allows, I'll be showing two old call-in clips I've posted on the forums before, and my raw call-in kill footage from last December.

I hope I have some time to actually talk!!!

I'll do what I can, Send-it!

Go after 'em, Baltz. Hope you get onto one!

So, I posted my book review section down under my Call-in Stories, on the call-in story page. I won't waste time on it at the meeting.

I also went back up and interviewed myself at a third call-in spot. These are coming out really good, it's funny how you remeber everything about that stand when you go back and find the exact spot!

Should be a fun time, not really a monologue... lots of FAQ and Q&A.
