Mountain lion in western NY

I'm hoping to get a picture within the next few days.
Heres the deal. Long story short. A woman has it on video,out between Syracuse and Rochester, as clear as day on her farmland. She called it in to DEC. At first they told her there are no cats in NY. When she informed them that she had it on video, they were at her house within the hour. They wanted to take the tape. When she refused to surrender it, they basically forcably gave her the old "You didn't see a thing, keep your mouth shut, don't be showing the tape around."
When I hear more, i'll post.

If they recognize their existence, then they have to classify them, locate them, estimate populations, and figure out how to manage them. There's LOTS involved...
 
Missouri announced the presence of a small and widely scattered mountain lion population within our state after a dozen or so verified sightings, video, dead lions by vehicle, ect. The Missouri Department of Conservation after some time also announced that while the mountain lion is a native animal of the state, they would NOT be compatible within a modern day management plan for the best interest of our state and its wildlife. The mountain lion is a protected species within Missouri, however, there are NO MANAGEMENT GOALS for the mountain lion by our MDC. Basically the MDC is saying, no you cannot shoot one just for the heck of it, and no we are not going to actively manage for the lion as it is deemed an undesirable species in modern day Missouri. If the lion makes it or not in modern Missouri is totally up to the big cat.

For years there have been "sightings" of cats in PA. You'd also hear of the occasional picture that a friend of a friend saw but no real hard proof. I've heard from more than one person that should be "in the know" that the reason the PAGC won't acknowledge their presence is that the minute they do the Fed. Gov't. will get involved and make their lives heck with management, population control, etc.
How true this all is I really can't say but it wouldn't surprise me either.

Did you read my post about how Missouri handled it? Why can't PA, or any other state, do the same?
 
We have Lynx here in ME, and a good population at that. The ARA groups threaten law suits against our fish and game dept. every year. They try and ban trapping all together. The IF&W cave in a lot due to lack of funds. The real problems are caused by the [beeep] ARA groups. Sooner or later we will lose trapping here. Where the heck is SCI and all of these groups, no where to be found.

this one was an accidental trapping. The wardens tagged and released it unharmed. Unfortunately there have been a very small amount that have not made it, fewer than are hit and killed by cars.

"Allegedly" , "Supposedly", same as all other stories. Get a copy of that pic and post it. That would have been headline news here in NY. Heck the TV stations showed over and over a black house cat video in western NY. Again Bovine Fecal Matter.

Sorry I was so crass. I don't understand the need to perpetuate myths and rumors about mountain lions in NY. If there are they are escaped pets. I have never seen a Moose in NY but I have seen proof they are here. Same goes for Fisher, Otter and a few others.
