Mountain Mahogany

I have had my eye on some Mountain Mahogany since last elk season and I finally got back up to cut some of it. This was cut along the east fork of the Bitterroot River.

I had a few dead ones spotted driving by all last fall on my way elk hunting. I cut them down hauled them home and ran a few pieces through the band saw, they are still to wet to turn but here is a preview, hopefully there will be calls to come!

here you go teasing again. i hope you dont get arrested for takeing somebody's firewood before you get to spin a call from it. actually neat looking wood, i can see the hills of trees disappearing now.
 
Time to find someone with a kiln. I don't want to wait a year or two to see a call from it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

That makes beautiful calls great sounding to very hard and dense. Let me know if you find a way to keep it from spliting. I loose probley 80% to 90% of my wood to spliting. I have tried cutting it dry and green it doesn't seem to matter it all splits. About the only way I have found is to cutit green and put it in the freezer tell your ready to turn it then turn it green and let it sit around for about a year and hope for the best.
 
What I cut was all dead and fairly dry, I was hopeing by cutting it now while it was fairly dormit it wouldn't split we will see

and good luck on it not cracking. Ive had some of that and some maple, ash and black walnut that has been drying for 2 years and it still splits on my when I cut it and it was dead when i cut it down/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
 
tjones nice looking wood there. I'am no expert on drying wood but I also visit a forum called Tree World. Mostly arborist and loggers lots of cool stuff with chainsaws which is why I visit. I cut firewood for hunting money. Any ways back to drying wood there is some topics on drying and milling wood on that forum. Hope this helps and cant wait to see some calls. I never realized that wood was so pretty inside. We hunt in it alot when In Idaho.
