Moving to Denver - help me pick a place to live!

I miss the mountains! We are planning on moving to Colorado later this summer. I only have one stipulation – the house has to be within 1½ hour drive from the Denver International Airport. Oh, and I do not want to live in the city! Some of the towns we are currently looking at: Ft. Collins, Longmont, Boulder, and Golden. How is south of Denver? Any other areas? Anyone need a hunting buddy? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

In Colorado, the places you listed ARE considered cities. Not towns. And not a one of them are in the mountains, but you can see them from there..........Don

Going to be tough to get out of the "city" and still be within 1-1/2 hrs of the airport. Most would consider the Front Range from Fort Collins to Colorado Springs to be the city. I would suggest looking to the east but that will put you further away from the mountains.

We understand that they are cities, we just don't want to live in the Denver Metro area. We feel that those would have more of the "small town" atmosphere.

Only one way to get a small town atmosphere........And them ain't it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Sorry to be the one to break this news to you. There are suburbs of Denver with smaller town atmospheres than these choices.

Denver pretty much encompasses all of those places... Look in the I-70 corridor like Idaho Springs, prices may be steep...

I have a nice townhouse I can sell you in Northglenn. Near the schools, by a park, down the street from the police station.... HEHE!!! It was a great neighborhood, but it was in the city. There is no place within an hour and a half of the airport I would consider small town anymore.

There are still plenty of ag towns within 1 1/2 hrs of DIA, they just aren't "close" to the mountains. Try I-70 east out to Limon and I-76 east out to Ft Morgan. For not exactly "small" towns but still not city, try up US 85 towards Greeley.

We live about 30 minutes due south of DIA on the toll road. It's still somewhat city but then its not. We are at 6300' or almost 1000' above downtown Denver. We look out across the "big" city and enjoy much cleaner air and less traffic.

We love it.

What about on the Palmer Divide...feels like mountains but you are still in eastern Colorado and fairly close to DIA.

Look into towns like Elizabeth, Kiowa, Elbert
Going the back way from Kiowa is just a straight shot north and only about 30 minutes from DIA....Elbert and Elizabeth only add about 10-15 minutes

Or at the base or foothills of the mountains like Sadalia

Or just up the mountains like Bailey or Evergreen.

Any particular reason you need to live 1 1/2 hours from DIA. (During rush hour you would have to live at DIA to meet this criteria)
More scenic west of Denver....cheaper to live east of Denver.

Lived here in CO all my life.....where is "fuel is way cheap".

My Bro lives in Loveland. About an hour drive to DIA if the traffic is moving good. I'm not a city boy or a townie in any way but Loveland is a pretty and clean little town. Everything is growing along the foothills of Colorado and one community is stretching into the other so don't be surpised to find a house next to a house next to a house within your search criteria. The rural look is fast disappearing east of the Rockies along 25.

Thanks for the input so far guys! I am a pilot so I would like to live within 1 1/2 hour drive from the airport. I would love to live close to the mountains. I lived in Cheyenne, WY for a year and loved to travel down to Fort Collins and Boulder area. That was 10 years ago and I never looked into living there. I like to Ski, hunt and hike so having a house close to the mountains would be nice. Here is a pic of 1 1/2 hour drive from the airport (I am sure its without traffic).

Are you set on Colorado? What airline do you fly for? Boise area is booming. There are lots of "towns" within 1 1/2 hours of the airport. Mountain Home has about 12,000 people and I think its in the top 20 populated areas in the whole state. Lots of people moving up here and the prices are increasing, but its still probably cheaper than Colorado.

JetBlue! (you all know that airline after the v-day disaster!) Mason - I would love to move to Boise, however I work out of New York and there are no direct flights from there. I grew up in Jackson, WY and miss the west. Denver is my top pick because of the flights to NY. Yes I will have to fly to NY just to go to work, but I do the same now from Ohio and if I have to commute I might as well live where I want.

I live north of Boulder along the foothills. Its the country feel with "city-life" close by. I can be shooting coyotes, geese, and prairie dogs 30 minutes east and shooting whitetails (Yes...whitetails) and elk out my backdoor. But, If I never had to drive around another jogger or bicyclist for the rest of my life...I would die a happy man. I will live someday in Western NE. people always ask me "why? theres nothing out there"...EXACTLY! Until I can move in another 14 years after I retire. I too must remain here. Like I said before, If I was to move it would be the Ft Lupton area. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I live in Ft. Morgan and it is about 50 minutes to DIA.The traffic isn't very heavy on I-76.I have all the coyote, deer, antelope, raccoon, rabbit and praire dog hunting within 10-20 minutes. For elk I go to north park which is 3 hours away. I grew up in Boulder in the late 50s and 60s and wouldn't move back to the front range for anything.Don
