OK, all you masters of sound, if a guy is in the market for a MP3 player, what would you suggest he buy? And also how do those players that you suggest rate as far as quailty, price, reliablity, memory, battery life, etc?

I'm certainly no expert but this is the unit the "real masters of sound" settled on and the price is certainly RIGHT!!!

I got the Refurbished Rio 600 (see Furface's post for the Sonic Blue website & go to "clearance"). It was $29.99 plus $6.00 shipping. Delivered in a couple days and very easy to use!

I can't address all your questions but will simply say that I got a remanufactured unit off E-bay for $60 and it's great. It's a Rio 800 and has a little more memory than the Rio 600 which is obviously handy. You can also buy "memory backpacks" if you like even more memory. The button placement, size and performance are excellent. It comes with a rechargeable battery and a charger but I just use a regular AA battery in mine. One nice feature is that the player shows the percent of battery charge remaining each time you turn on the unit.

If you're not in too much of a rush, I'll be happy to let you know how the PoGo Ripflash Plus 128 meg MP3 player/recorder I'm ordering this week works out.

It has a line in and a USB cable both and will convert the tracks from a CD to MP3s without a PC. IOW, you can just plug a CD player into it line-out to line-in. Or you can load MP3's the conventional way via the USB and a computer. Or best of all, field record directly to the device using an external microphone--for instance a Nady 151VR-LT wireless lavalier microphone hidden at a densite/bird's nest/bunny slaughterhouse.

PoGo's tech support assures me I'll be able to move the MP3s so recorded back over to the PC via the USB.(Because even my "studio" recorded calls greatly benefit from clean-up and volume adjustment in Goldwave).

Retails from PoGo direct for $129. Surfing around now to see if I can find one in stock for around $100.

My Nady 151VR/LT in Channel A was backordered all this time, til just this week... but now that it's here and I've had the chance to fiddle around with it, in combination with the PoGo RipFlash Plus MP3 Recorder/player I've had now for about a month, I thought to check back in on this old thread.

So far so good--Works great! Happily, though, the Nady receiver has a headphone jack as well as the output jack. Had to use this to record. Not enough signal on the output jack for the line-in of the PoGo, apparently. Headphone out makes for nice clean recordings; no hiss, and I didn't have to spend any addt'l bucks to scrounge up a separate pre-amp.

(So in order to record, the cables get swapped around backwards from how you'd use it as a caller: the little lapel microphone gets attached to the transmitter just like the pictures in the instruction booklet... the patch cable goes between the line-in on the PoGo and the receiver headphone out).

A bit strange that when the Nady is used as a wireless remote for the caller, the receiver headphone jack puts out a lot more noise when plugged into the Hobbytron 7W amp circuit. No biggie, I'll use the output jack instead, no noise from that.

I'll let you all know when or if I find a good densite and get any interesting new ML vocalizations. Also I've got my eye on half a dozen pint-sized cottontail bunnies scampering up and down the drive. And then there's the fresh tiny little blacktail fawn hoofprints in the dust this morning, just newly hatched out...

I have always been a big fan of the Creative Labs line of products. I have one of their Jukeboxs. Couple that with a playdock, and you have a good device for sitting in a bush.

While these are not waterproof, they are good and seem to be very reliable.

Remember, all of these devices have quirks. Not bugs, but quirks. Kinda like all of the equipment I use.
