Mtn Lion Killed in Virginia ??

I saw a post on a VA hunting forum that said a farmer in Clarke Co VA killed a Mtn Lion with his bow this past Monday /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif. It was reported that the Game Warden tagged it and said it was a Cougar not a Mtn Lion and all this time I thought they were the same, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif or did he do that because Mtn Lions are listed on the endanged speices list in VA and the farm was a high dollar horse farm? Just wondering if anyone else had seen or heard anything about this. I like to see some pictures myself. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Puma, Cougar, Mountain Lion, Catamount, Painter, American lion, Mexican lion, Florida Panther, Silver Lion, Red Lion, Red Panther, Red Tiger, Brown Tiger, Deer Tiger, Ghost Cat, Mountain Screamer, Indian Devil, Sneak Cat, King Cat, and Painted Cat, they are all Puma concolor.

They are often called panthers in N. America, but in Central and S. America "panther" is refering to a Jaguar (Panthera onca).

Leon... you forgot one! "Putty Tat"! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I would be interested in seeing some pics myself... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

VA,
Sounds like someone's "pet" got loose! It's not impossible, though, there have been stories of cougar sightings along the Blue Ridge as far north as Rappahannock county for years; no hard core evidence, though.
I think I'll have to waste a couple of dimes on this one...

I'm sorry i thought it was illegal to shoot endangered species
in va.??You can't tell me he was protecting his horses with a bow??

Have'nt heard anything or saw anything about that. I've had several people tell me that they have saw one this past deer season in Rich Valley. (Several people....)

Where is Rich Valley? Do you consider any of those reports reliable? I would love to see Mnt. Lions and Elk make a comeback VA south through the Smokies. Elk have been stocked some for a couple of years and are doing well, I think.

Dimecovers3,
Rich Valley is here in Southwest VA. The people that are telling me are reliable. One of the farmers there in the Valley has seen one twice in the last few months. My step dads family lives there and several of them have said they saw the big cats too.
I can remember my grand dad & dad talking about the Elk that used to be here. I too would love to see them in this area but don't think the VDGIF will every allow it. They are afraid they will bring CDW (Chronic Wasting Disease). Our laws state we can kill either sex of elk during any legal deer hunting season. And there are usally 5-10 killed each year state wide.

It wouldn't surprise me. I know our states out east here seem small, but Virginia has some incredibly remote areas, especially in the Blue-Ridge areas.

I used to live in Thompsom valley. I love that area. I have drove through rich valley often . Onmy way to Hungry Mother Park.

I am thinking Rich Valley is west of I-81 near Saltville. Is that close? I would be trying to get that cat on video if I lived near by. I did not know Elk were open season in Va. Were they stocked there or have they just migrated up the mountains from the south? What counties have them? My cousin owns 3000 acres in Rockbridge Co. and that area is so incredible for hunting. Saw more big bucks there in one day than a year here.

The Elk came in from CainTuck and are legal to shoot during the VA deer season and you check them on your deer license. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

We have plenty of cougar here in michigan (upper and lower) so it wouldnt come as any surprise to hear of them in your area down there. Our DNR has tried to downplay and even belittle those that claimed to see them but after several years of encounters they can no longer deny their existence.

Well for the record...Here in PA we call them Bobcats! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I think he was being sarcastic because everytime a MTN Lion is reported it usually turns out to be a bobcat or a blonde coyote. Although I do truely believe there are MTN lions here in PA, its just most evidence counters that theory.

VA,
I finally got to speak to one of the DGIF Warden supervisors today, and I had talked to one of the biologists at our office here in town(they also cover Clarke county). Nobody has heard a thing about this cat being killed. You got a link to the original source??
I'm not quite ready to call BS, but almost!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
