Mueller 3-10x44 Sport Dot Experience??

I was recently given a marlin .17 hmr xt v, and was considering purchasing this scope for hunting in low light conditions, including spotlighting with a red lens for bobcat and fox. Does anyone have experience with this scope? I already own a simmons aetec 2.8-10x44 but haven't mounted it to give it a shot. I have done a little digging and both the mueller and aetec seem to have favorable reviews in low light; however the mueller has an illuminated sight and thicker reticle lines. If anyone has experience with the mueller I'd greatly appreciate your input.

Check out the new Vortex Crossfire ii 3-12x56 hog scope with adjustable red dot. $300 bucks & full lifetime warranty. Just put one on a new 17 Hornet. Forget red lens get red LED light, see much better !
Happy shopping !

It certainly looks like a nice scope, but it's a little out of my price range. Can find the mueller for under 150. I do like the warranty Vortex offers though. Is there a solid black dot in the center of the reticle? Or is it a red dot only?

Hey Havock, welcome to the site! Last time I checked the mueller was discontinued in that model. I believe they only have a 3-9 and 4-16 now but I may be wrong. I was looking for one for my 223 for hunting at night in the snow and never had any luck finding one. Good luck and if you do find somewhere thathas them please let me know because I would still be interested in one for the 223! Thanks!

Awesome! Every where I have looked has said product unavailable. If you happen to talk to them to see if they still have them let me know if you don't care. Thanks in advance and good luck!

I have two of the Mueller 4x16s. I really like them. They track extremely well. The IR dot has 11 settings for varying light conditions. I have yet to find any negative to pass on.

Good to hear, I just tried mounting the simmons I have, and I can barely slide a dollar bill between it and the barrel lol. Outside it actually seems to have decent visuals at night, although I have nothing to compare it to. The crosshairs seem to disappear in the shadows depending on the target though. I really like the red dot on the muellers and vortex v-brite sight. Maybe I'll just stick with the aetec and save myself some money. In your opinion, would the illuminated sight be worth it?

To me, I say yes, that's exactly why I bought them. Aging eyes suffer in low light. It's a matter of how important being able to make the shot or not is to you. For me, if I spend 2 hours pursuing an animal or 3K on a hunt and $200.00 will allow me to make to make the shot or go home wishing I had, then the $200.00 becomes a no brainer.

I had one it lasted about 7 years on a muzzleloader a seal went on it and it would fog. Mueller would have fixed it if I could have found the receipt. I liked the scope until it started fogging on me. I would consider another for a light recoiling rifle.

My experience with Mueller scopes has been very good. I have the exact scope you mentioned on a 6x45 AR, my go-to calling outfit. My son has the Sport Dot 3x9 and loves it.

Three years ago I hunted in Arizona and sent a rifle and the 3x9 Mueller via UPS to my destination. Once I arrived, I checked it to see if POI had changed. Sighting was still perfect and exactly as I had it sighted at home. I didn't even remove the turrent covers, then went out and began shooting prairie dogs.

I also have the other scope you mentioned, the 2.8x10 Simmons Aetec, the old model. It's a good scope, but I prefer the Mueller.

Hm, thanks for the input guys. I have a tough decision ahead of me. May be coming into a little extra money pretty soon, so I could probably jack up my price range a little. Looks like I got a job with the city, and I still have a good 3-4 months before I'll be putting my little hmr to use. I probably won't be shooting over 150-200 yards or so as .17's don't have the greatest range. But I'm planning to do some serious calling this winter. Do you think a mueller would do find for headshots at those ranges. Quite often I can only see their eyes in the distance. Just hoping to avoid missing a rare chance at a cat.

I had a 3x9x40 sport dot on my 22.250 & it was very accurate (7/16" at 200yds & clover leaves at 100yds. with my handloads). I fell on ice last winter & it would not hold zero after that so I sent it back & they replaced it. I now have the new one f/s in the classifieds here if you are interested drop me a PM.

The adjustable red dot is the ticket for night shooting!

Hm. If I were to bump up my price range to 400-500 dollars how would mueller hold up to the competition in terms of glass quality? I'd like to keep the objective smaller than 50 as I don't like oversized scopes. 40-44 would be ideal. I know the larger objective allows more light into the scope, but Is there glass within this price range that will be as clear at night as a 50-56mm mueller? If so, which brands/models should I consider? I'm sure a mueller would do fine, but I'd prefer to buy something that I won't want to replace a while down the
Road. I may be moving the scope around on larger range rifles as well, say up to 500-600 yards for antelope and mule deer. I imagine I should post a new topic for this?

I don't know how it compares to any but my Burris ff11 & Luepold vxr. IMO there is not any difference between them shooting at night out to approx 200yds. with red led lights.
