Mueller Sport Dot

I am looking to purchase a scope for my 22 mag. for night hunting. The gun may do some day hunting, but mostly evening into night. I am leaning towards the Mueller sport dot 3-10X44. Seems like the correct magnification and exit pupil for my needs. What is the optical quality of these scopes, compared with Bushnell 3200s? Thanks in advance. Tim

I have a Mueller 4-16 x50 sport dot. I really like the etched glass reticle and illumination--- the illumination goes real dim so when hunting on moonlit nights it works great and is not overpowering. The glass is good and bright. I do not have a Bushnell 3200 to compare it to. It is not the sharpest scope I have but it is very good. I can see .22 holes on the white paper at the 200 yrd target-- something I can do only with a couple of my scopes. I know several magazines/online places reviewed the scopes when they first came out-- if you google for it you may find them.

But one other thing about Mueller is there customer service-- it is good. I had a early generation scope that needed warranty work (a problem which is no longer present in the newer ones) and sent them an e-mail. I got a response to send it in-- no further questions or grief, so far so good. I sent it USPS on a Wed. and the next Wed. the UPS truck pulls in the yard and hands me a brand new scope. I would not hesitate buying another scope from them.

As has been mentioned, Mueller has excellent customer service. I have owned 4 Mueller scopes, and THREE of them had to be returned. While they did replace them quickly and easily, I'll never trust them again. If you ask me, 3 out of 4 having to be returned because of gas leaks and fogging is unacceptable. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Buy yourself a Nikon and enjoy it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have a Mueller Multi-Shot 2-7x and have used it in several competitions and other abusive situations and, so far, it's holding up great.

Sorry, but I can't give you a comparison with the Bushnell.

With would be better for the 22 Mag? 3-10X44 or 4-16X50 AO? The 3-10 should have a slightly larger exit pupil, by 2.1mm, if the advertised magnification and lens size is accurate. 14.6 for the 3-10, 12.5 for the 4-16. Both set on their lowest settings.

I think that the 3-10 would mount much easier (lower) than the 4-16 which is a big scope already and be a better weight for the mag (even a 44 is getting big). JMHO

Something to keep in mind,FWIW: I was looking into a Mueller 4-16x50 sport dot, and just before making my order, I looked at the picture(for the 100th time at least) and noticed the mounting area was not very long. I called the dealer and had them measure for me, and found out that it wouldn't fit on my rifle with my current weaver style bases and wide rings /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif. MIGHT be able to cure that with a different base/ring set-up, but I really don't want to change them out, so I'm still looking. It looks like the 3-9x40 would fit ok, but it's not what I wanted... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I bought the 4-16 Sport Dot for my Rem SPS in 17 FB. I set up this rig especially for night hunting foxes in PA. I liked the lighted dot reticle and the extra heavy outer crosshairs. Other lighted reticles with the full x-hairs lighted are too bright and glare to much at night.

I have only shot a dozen or so groundhogs and it works great so far. Optically, it's not near as good as an Elite 3200, but it's acceptable.

I have to agree with Bdawg, it is a BIG scope for a 4-16, and the mounting area is short. I still have room on mine between the front ring and the turrets for an upside-down ring to mount my Optronics light though. But on some guns that length would be critical. It is easily solved with offset rings on standard Weaver bases, but I don't know any manufacturer of offset tipoff rings (the kind with 3/8" dovetail).

I like it as much as my Leupolds and Burris scope. I agree with bownut I really like the one small dot for night hunting works great. I found E Arthur Brown Co to have best prices. Here's the link

I too have a Mueller. Mine is a 3 X 9 with a 40mm bell. If you are only putting it on a 22mag I don't think you need a higher power magnification. No problems with mine. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I got the 2-7 sport dot on my 22 mag and on one 10-22. The dot is the cats tail for coons and fox hunting. I find that the eye relief is just fine. I also run an APV on my Hornet.
