i was thinking that i would like to have a muzzle break installed on my rock river predator persuit. i think the barrel measures .723. all the breaks i see in the catalogs are for .500 i think. have any of you guys ever had a muzzle break installed. who did your work? thanks lee

The barrel can be turned down to .500" and threaded for any style break you want. The best brake on the market is the Vias. They are loud. Any break thats not loud don't work and is worthless. The louder they are the better they work.

dan do you do this work? will the barrel look silly with a .500 break on a .700 barrel? if you do this kind of work dan shoot me a pm. thanks lee

The bad thing about the Vias is that shooting prone, you get the dust flying up around you. A baffle style break such as Darrel Hollands, Shawn Carlocks or Straight Shot gunsmithings would work better shooting prone.

Vias makes breaks in many sizes. Get a .750" break and have the riflesmith reduce the OD when he installs it.

This is a great brake. And it IS loud. I have one on my 220 Swift and really enjoy watching the bullet hits on poor hapless animals.

Oh, and it VAIS not Vias. From the designer George Vais, who incidentally is the very builder of my Swift. He is a master gunsmith working in Boise Idaho. He came highly recommended from the local benchrest and 600 yard boys.

IIRC He sold the rights and can no longer make them.

He still makes and installs brakes. He made the one on my Swift. But nowhere are you going to find the Vais name on it. When he moved back to his native Greece several years ago he sold the rights to his name. He was ill and not planning on coming back. But when his health improved he did come back but by court order he cannot use the Vais name. He is a gifted man. Even looks old world craftsman. Apron, long dropping moustache with dishiveled hair, glasses on the end of his nose. A fine painter too. His phone number is 208 3237674. He does not advertise yet he has all the work he can do from word of mouth. That how I found out about him as well.

Give him a call. He will tell you how to ship him your gun. Just dont ask him to install a "Vais" muzzle break. A "Vais like" may be a better term now.

Russ how long did it take to get installed and back to you? I would love to put one on the 22-250. Would we have it back in time for are PD hunt?? Also what is the cost?

I have a 30-06 with a decent kick to it and never thought about a muzzle break. Does it reduce recoil substantially?

Yup it was put on cause the wife used the gun and it would cause her to flinch after the break she loves to shoot it. Heck my 9 year old son who is all of 70lbs will shoot it rp

"Vais Arms was purchased from George Vais by Ron Bartlett in 1999. At this time the company was incorporated under the same name because of the association of the Vais name with the muzzle brakes.

Ron Bartlett is the owner and operator of Vais Arms, Inc. Ron’s career in gunsmithing began when he graduated with an associate degree in gunsmithing from Trinidad State Jr. College in Trinidad, Colorado. After graduation he was employed by Dale Wise Custom Guns in San Antonio for four years where he learned some of the finer points of rifle barrel work .From ’71 to ’74 he worked for Robert Kleinguenther (now KDF) as gunsmith in charge of quality control.

In ’97 Ron decided to try the Vais muzzle brake since brakes were getting more popular all the time, and the Vais brake was advertised as being quieter. After making initial contact with George Vais he was invited to order the brakes direct. The Vais brakes were soon so popular with customers that they insisted on no other brake but the Vais.

After a friendly two and a half year business relationship with George Vais, George informed Ron that he could no longer tolerate the pollution and food additives in our country and wanted to move back to his home country of Greece. The business in its entirety was offered to Ron. After Georges asking price was met and a non-compete agreement was signed the business was transferred to Ron."

a non-compete agreement was signed and there is where law suits come from. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Time should run about at week. The break was $160 installed. Super fine job. You cant see where the barrel ends and the brake starts. Only when it is unscrewed will you ever notice that it is not all one.

Not too sure if he has gone up in the last couple of years. Give him a call. I think that he is open on Saturdays.

Ron Bartlett is a wonderful person to do business with and the Vais break is a wonderful break.

I've been spelling Vais incorrectly all these years, also.
