Just wondering what type of powder you guys would recomend for my .50 caliber muzzleloader. I was thinking about the American pioneer sticks i hear they burn very efficiently and i will not have to clean the barrel as often. Thanks

Matt,
I could not get them to group in my Omega, with any of the bullets that normally shoot well with loose 777.
Triple 7 does produce a PITA crud ring that can be minimized using the Remington Kleenbore primers, or going to a small rifle priming system and CCI 400 primers.
Loose T7 3F has shot the best for me and produced the highest velocities in doing so.

I love the triple 7 and remington kleenbore primers also.
I have been shooting mine out of a .45 caliber. Shoots fantastic and cleans so much nicer.

I really like the real original Goex black powder but it's getting difficult to find with the government regs these days. I just bought a bottle of loose American Pioneer and plan to measure it just like Goex. I've heard that the sticks are inconsistant in weight thus creating accuracy issues.

I use nothing but American Pioneer Sticks with the Hornady 250 gr SST. Both my Omega and my Encore group 1 inch at 100 yards with two 50 gr sticks. The secret to getting good group with this powder is to use a tight sabot like the Hornady and to wet patch between each shot. Just use a damp patch to wipe the bore between each shot. The American Pioneer is much better than Triple 7 or Pyrodex in both my Muzzleloaders. The Power Belt will not work worth a crap with AP because they are to loose in the barrel, you must use very tight fitting sabots. One other thng stay away from full powered 209 primers and use the Remington 209 that are made just for inline muzzleloader /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Check your states regs. to make sure that pellets or substitute powder is legal. In Oregon now we can't use pellets, or sabots, or even non traditional priming methods, or fiber optic sights on a muzzle loader, during a black powder hunt.

Thanks for the help everyone /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif....im still considering what to do

I always thought of using pellets as being the same as loading my .270 with one two or three powder weights with no other flexiblity. Loose powder for me and I'll take mine black as in Goex or Swiss with Graf being another great choice.

About those crud rings, they are standard with ml guns and flat bsed projectiles. Take a clue from the long range muzzleloaders and wipe before loading each shot. Another thing that works good is a felt wad soaked in bore solvent and placed under the projectile before loading. Combines the wipe and load into one step.

These days, I'm partial to Triple 7... The crud ring is annoying, but if you just wipe with a moist (doesn't have to be wet, just moist) patch between firings, it is really not that big of a deal.

110gr 777 under a Sierra 240gr JHP in a Hornady sabot groups at about 1 1/2 inches at 100 out of my CVA Optima... and chrono's at about 1880 fps.

Cleanup is a snap, and no stink. The wife likes that.

Works for me.

I shoot loose 777 and a CCI 400 primer in an Encore. Loose powder is my choice because I shoot quite a bit and it's way cheaper!
