Im 15 and live in ohio I just got my first rifle at basspro. Its semi auto with wood stock and blued/stainless barrel.I have a bushnell scope 3-9x40 and had it sighted at basspro. I havent got the chance to shoot it though.I was planning to go coyote hunting soon and was wondering if my rifle could take it.Its open season and no limit here.

with a good shot yes, however i have seen and heard a lot on this forum & i think you might want to step up to something in the range of a 223 - 243 round. just my 2 cents. thats a great gun to start out with though, i have the same & did'nt get mine until i was 25

I say get on out there and have some fun Baker, If you live in the Southern NV area let me know and we'll get together. You can practice your shooting and get real good with that gun, and then find a real fast shooting round like CCI stinger, and try a head shot at close range. you should be good to go on most occasions.
Cleveburg is right though the other bigger rounds would be more appropriate for this game animal. But get out there anyhow. I know alot of folks who have poached deer with a .22lr back in the day when food was tough, and that by no means is a deer gun, but it worked just fine.
Shot placement accounts for alot here with this one.

In my honest opinion, andif your state laws do not restrict, I wouldn't shoot anything smaller than a .204. or .223. The .22lr just is undergunned, honestly.

Good Luck in your decision /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

3rd Alarm

I have that same rifle, it was my first gun also. Mine is an excellent shooter and has been on many a coyote hunt. I would not hesitate a bit to take it out again. If you have the same model as I do then it won't shoot stingers the best round I have found is a HyperVelocity Hollow Point. Like everyone before me has said you have to hit 'em REAL good if you are using a .22LR, ( a bigger round is a little more forgiving) but it's about the hunt just as much as the kill. Happy hunting !!!!! oklacoyote

At 15 years old, I think you have a wonderful gun for coyote hunting. I would recommend not anything over 75yds and use the advise from above post use a good bullet like the stinger or any hyper velocity round. Also I suggest getting you a high capacity clip and keep pumping lead into him until you make sure he's down. Congrats on your new gun! I didn't get my 10/22 until I was about 21 and I still one of my favorite guns!

Congratulations on your new gun. As you can already tell you are going to get some people who's first responce is "get a bigger gun". Nevermind them, you have a great hunting gun. Yes you will need to get a bigger gun to consistantly kill coyotes and you will probably have some coyotes run off. But here is my recomendations to limit the losses and get you on the right track.

1) Don't trust the site-in from BassPro. Site it in yourself, they might be close but close won't cut it.

2) The Bushnell scope might give you troubles. Not that it's a bad scope but it is designed to shoot at targets 200 yards away, not 50 yards. If you can swing it, get yourself a Simmons 22 Mag scope. Great rimfire scope and is set up for the ranges you will be shooting. I have had one on my 10/22 for 4 years and it has NEVER lost point of aim. Check Ebay. Some great deals on there and if you are patient you will be able to pick one up real cheap (between $10 and $20)

3) Practice makes perfect. Shoot as often as posible. I recommend every other night at first if you can get out that much. Shoot at least 20 shots but no more than 50/per day. And except for sighting in, never shoot it from a "shooting bench" or other pre-arranged shooting support. Shoot it from all sorts of positions, sitting, kneeling, prone (lying down), etc. And remember, a critter is not going to show up right in front. Practice shooting from odd angles in those positions. Example: You are sitting facing south and the target is to your left in the east. Shoot a 1000 shots thru the gun or until you are able to hit a 2" ( 1" better) target at 50 yards from all sorts of odd angles, 9 outta 10 times! Make it a game with yourself to see what kinda contorted positions you can put yourself in and still hit your target.

4) Use CCI Mini-Mags. I have yet to see a gun that didn't shoot this round well and it should be more accurate than the CCI Stingers. With small calibers such as the .22 cal, accuracy is going to be the most important item. The extra punch you get out of a Stinger won't do you much good if it doesn't make a good hit. A good hit with a Mini-Mag will kill just a quick as a good hit with a Stinger. And Mini-Mags are cheaper to boot.

5) As it said in the movie, "Aim small, Miss Small". Don't just aim at the head. Aim at the eye, or better yet the corner of the eye. The smaller the target the better. Ignore everything else, just concentrate on your small target.

6) Limit your shots to 50 yards until you can drop a yote at that range everytime.

7) Hunt, Hunt, Hunt!!! Hunt everything your 10/22 can legally kill. Coyote, fox, ground squirels, jack rabbits, rats, raccoons, etc.

Keep us informed and have a great time!!

Good Luck,
Chris

Give em hell Baker, ther have been many,MANY coyotes killed with a 22 lr,get some real good ammo like a Velocitor HP and limit urself to shots in the 75 yard range and you will get one,aim for the vitals right behind the front shoulder blade.

Baker Go get um. What a better way to get started in this great sport that we all enjoy. Tip shoot the in the head they wont move a muscle arter you drill them. The biggest thing is to just have fun.

Baker,
Go back and reread Chris Brice's post. He has it dead on /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif! When you have reread it, go back in a day or two and do it again. That will help you remember (if you have a memory like mine /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif). His advice is very sound. Wish you the best with that rifle. I'll bet you will have it for a very long time.

Sorry Baker the standard 10/22 will not shoot .22 mags. Also, unless you resticted to rimfires I can't recommend getting a .22 mag. They are fine guns but why have two guns that are undersized for coyotes and the ammo cost more than the .22 LR.

When you are ready to move up, go get a H&R or NEF .223 (centerfire) single-shot. The gun will cost about the same as a quality .22 mag, the ammo is the cheapest centerfire ammo out there, and you will no longer be under gunned.

But heck, thats a long ways off. Just get some "good" ammo for your 10/22 and go at it.

Chris

I use my 10/22 with a bushnell 3x9 too, and i also use Velocitors and have a 30 rd clip. Head shots will drop em', but a shot in the throat will too. Good luck, and when you want a new gun, you should get either an NEF or a Stevens 200. Have fun and good luck!!
