Looking for something for home defense & personnal protection.

What caliber?

I'm liking the Springfield XDM 5.25" Match in 9mm. I like the fact of having 19 rounds, if all he11 breaks loose.

Always been a revolver guy up to this point. Help please.

Ive got a one of the origanal XDs full size tactical 40cal.

Great guns XDs have had nothing but good word. I think for fun and for home defense 19 rounds sounds like an awesome choice. A 9mm was a little small for my liking(for no good reason) and a 45 was a little too slow(...) I have no complaints with what ive got and they have only improved on a great gun.

19 9mm will sound like a belt fed M60 to some idiot burglar, you dont need to hit them to make them wet their pants but you got a heck of a lot of chance to hit them.

Keltec's PMR 30 sounds like a lot of fun and great, but its a 22 mag. It hold 30 rounds and kicks like a pellet gun, would be great for the wife or kids in an emergency.

I dont think you would have any regrets with the new XD 9mms. Good luck, they are fun too.

IMO...The 9mm will only pi$$ em off. Or it would me anyway. I have been told that the 9mm will work for HD. But, if I were you but I'm not I would get either the XDM 40 cal or the .45 myself with the PDX rounds. Yes they are pricey but hopefully you'll not have to use them. They also come in .223, .243, and the big hole puncher 30-06..

So I can shoot you with my 9mm and you'd just get mad? are you the hulk?

gone through a couple handguns now, wish I had just listened and bought the glock in the first place.... btw its a glock 19 and I love it, and with good quality hollow points a 9mm will kill whatever you want

There you go!

But yeah, the 9 is plenty of power. It penetrates like no other. Bullet selection is critical.

There you go. Go Glock, and don't look back. I have been competing with my Glock for 7 years, and have almost 70,000 rounds through it, and I trust it with my life. NEVER trust that you will only need one round to get the job done. Always count on an accurate follow up shot, or two regardless of caliber. 9mm will get the job done, just put the shots where you need them. Glocks are also good since it does not require a gunsmith to work on it. Want a custom trigger, $25 about 45 minutes and you have it. There are plenty of Glock knock offs, go with the original.

I hate the whole bigger is better reasoning. i can get 150 9mm rounds for what 50 45 rounds cost. that means 3 times the practice for the $. id much rather shoot a 9mm that is second nature in my hands and that ive put over 1000 rounds through than a 45 that ive shot 200 rounds through and then set it in the nightstand cause its too expensive to shoot it.

if money is no option then sure go for the bigger gun if that makes you feel safer.

just about every handgun caliber is underpowered anyway. A handgun is ment to get you to the best gun for home defense. a 18-1/2" barreled 12 gauge with 4 buck in it.

and as far as what pistol to buy. ive shot xdm's 1911's walthers and glocks, the next one i spend my hard earned money on will be a glock.

The XDM is a big gun, great for matches, bedside protection and while not impossible to conceal for personal protection, more difficult. Currently I have a XD-subcompact which I love, and recently sold my tactical for want of another pistol. I used it for USPSA.

The G19 is a great recommendation. Generally what I recommend also. If you want round count, get a 33 round mag for it, I think they even may have a drum mag out there too.

I have seen more dead people shot with the 22lr than any other.

A model 22 glock is the gun I trust to protect my home. It goes bang everytime I pull the trigger. I have had it for 12 years and it has never jammed on me. I have a couple 1911's and revolvers but the glock is on the nightstand.

+1 G19. I picked one up a few months ago and I am more than pleased with it. Practice ammo is very reasonable too.

Also, I am confident in the caliber. Shot placement is the key to any caliber being affective.

I shoot, and reload, 9mms, .40s, and 10mms...9mms are much less expensive to shoot when compared to the other two, the availability of ammo is almost universal and contrary to some comments, it will kill/wound just as effectively as the others...

While I prefer the 10mm for hunting due to the transfer of kinetic energy, there have been gelatin tests that show the 9mm has deeper penetration...

Seems to be a good following on here for the Glocks. I will give them a good hard look. I noticed on their website that they even have a model chambered in 357mag. Any thoughts on a caliber like that? Thinking that since I'm familiar with shooting and reloading the 357mag, it might be something to consider. Thanks for all the good info.

I have a Springfield XD40 full size for home defense that I like and a Smith and Wesson M&P9c for concealed carry. If I had it to do over again I'd get a full size M&P instead of the XD. The M&P just feels better in my hand and has a better trigger.

Glock chambers the .357 Sig, a necked down .40 S&W.

Glocks will owrk, but if you want to do it with class, get a Sig! This is a P226 in 357 Sig setup for home defense.

90% of my auto sare 9mm or 357 sig, you cant go worn with either and I much prefer either over the the .40 by a large margin.

I got a Glock 32 on layaway. Gonna use it for my new woods gun. How many rounds do you have through your 33? How does it shoot?

But I do love my M&P's !
