My 1st semi-auto pistol

+1 for the CZ P01's. My all-time favorite pistol. My Wife and I both have one. Glocks are great weapons but they are not for me. I will be ordering a couple C&R surplus CZ82 9X18 Makarov's here in the next month or two. They are perfect size for CC. Hard to beat the feel of a CZ in the hand.

Get a glock 17/19 and be done with it

Put a round or 2 Hornady Critical Defense or Winchester Silver Tips in you and see how pissed offn you are.

Or hyra-shoks

I concur that Glocks are nothing short of outstanding. And when a more traditional grip angle becomes an option, they will get a hard look from me.

I dont own a Glock but have heard lately from several XD AND Glock owners, they go XD.

I'll qualify my previous statement. I own both and prefer the XD, but had I purchased a Glock first, it probably would be reversed. The XD grip angle and trigger are what I'm more familiar with.

Keep your booger hook off the bang switch, until you are ready to send one. A safety is a mechanical device that can AND will fail. Just one more thing to have to remember to disengage when the time comes. Many of the top revolver manufacturers have never installed safeties, and they have been carried by millions of people safely for years.

Nothing replaces safe handling, nor practice with your firearm. I am with GC, go to a range where you can rent and use a handgun. Take the advice and recommendations taht you are getting here, and give them a run and go with what fits, and feels good.

I love my CZ 75B in 9mm. Lots of rounds throught it with zero problems. Would love to add ssome crimson trace laser grips but can't afford them right now.

I have a feeling that a Springfield XDM or Smith & Wesson will end up being what I choose. I will need to take the time and see what models are available & try to put them in my hands, to get a feel for what I like. I will take a good look at the Glocks, also.

Anyone have experience using LaserMax internal lasers on your handguns? I think that the internal guide rod laser would make for a nice setup. Just looking for some reviews on them.

I have a 82 and a SP-01. Love them both. I wish I could like Glocks, but I can't get used to the grip angle and don't want to switch. My buddy's got an XD and they are nice for a polymer gun.

^^^This^^^

No need for a bunch of safeties on a defensive handgun when it's in the hands of a well trained, practiced shooter.

I prefer Glock. Nothing fancy, reliable, and goes bang when I pull the trigger.

As far as 9mm vs .45acp....either will do. I prefer .45acp because I like to put big holes in stuff.

9mm is more than enough to kill a man. [beeep] a 22lr could do it with proper shot placement. Shoot a caliber that you can be proficient with and don't worry about bravado. Dead is dead. My old man used to shoot a snub nose 38 on the force back in the day.

if money is no option then sure go for the bigger gun if that makes you feel safer.

just about every handgun caliber is underpowered anyway. A handgun is ment to get you to the best gun for home defense. a 18-1/2" barreled 12 gauge with 4 buck in it.

and as far as what pistol to buy. ive shot xdm's 1911's walthers and glocks, the next one i spend my hard earned money on will be a glock.

Totally agree with everything you wrote.

The fact of the matter is that even a .22 can accomplish what a home defense gun needs to accomplish. If you open up on an intruder, given the bark and flash of even a .22 combined with bullets pounding into him and zipping past him, the last thing he's going to be thinking is, "Golly, since this isn't a .45 that's hammering me, I think I'll get up and charge the guy shooting me."

Also, the "more is always better" crowd should also consider what happens when bullets start flying through walls. My quandry is that I have a wife and kids, so going off like Rambo and spraying shots everywhere is a monumental mistake. You could easily kill or injure what you're trying to protect.

The best defense isn't more firepower. the best defense is superior tactics that result in making it difficult or impossible for the enemy to accomplish his objectives. I just laugh at fools who talk about "knockdown power" and all that bullsh!t when it comes to home defense. If it gets to that point, you've already failed. The goal is to make sure you and your family survive unharmed. If you can do that without firing a shot AND manage to alert the police and get the perp arrested, you have scored the ultimate victory.

The best strategy in home defense is NOT to kill the other guy in a shootout before he kills you. The strategy that is best is to make difficult for the enemy to even get to the point where he could engage you in a shootout. And if he does manage that, you should have placed yourself in a superior defensive position, making it clear to him that it will be an impossible situation for him to win.

As for the 9mm comment that I made earlier in the post, I was only being sarcastic...I know the 9 will do also. I just like the .40 and .45 myself. IMO I didn't mean to make anybody seam like I was arrogant because I'm really not. I just don't like the 9..

If you don't mind the length, I love the Glock 34. It's overall as smooth as anything I've had, and the 9mm keeps the muzzle flip out of the way. I say this after having owned or still owning Colt, Para, Springfield, H&K, Beretta, Kimber and other Glocks. For me, if it had the trigger that some of the others had, it would be perfect to me, and I'm not the Glock stickers all over my truck and think they hung the moon kind of guy, I carry a model 22 daily and can't stand it.

But seriously the 9mm may have killed more humans than any other round, plus ammo is cheap. Humans are weak physically and mentally. IMHO even 22lr will disable the attacker or send him running the other direction.
