during modern gun deer season here in ky, it is legal to use a .223 rifle for hunting deer. we are not allowed to use fmj though understandably! now on to my question,
i have 55 grain pointed soft point rounds and i was wondering if that would be ok for deer? if not what ammo recommendations do you have?

thanks,
Lonnie

53gr triple shock, 55gr triple shock, 60gr Partition, 62gr triple shock would be my choice.

If you had an 1/8 twist, 70gr triple shock or 75gr SSII's would be another good choice.

I've killed a handful of deer with .223/223ai and they've never ran more then 50yds. All required 1 shot.

I'm currently running 75gr SSII's with excellent results out of my .223ai.

Your 55gr SP should be fine. It isn't hard to kill a WT. Put a bullet into the kill zone and it'll go down. Good luck.

Cat Daddy,

No, I haven't. I have a buddy who runs a .22-250 and he runs 69 SMK's and he's shot a pile of deer. Everything was one shot, bang flop.

We have been using the Winchester 64g power points out of a 9" twist barrel. So far 3 shots 3 kills, 3 pass throughs in chest area-range 25-70yards. The .223 certainly has its limitations for deer sized game but will work great in proper conditions. TnTnTn

I shot one deer with a plain old 55gr PSP out of a 22-250 years ago. It was a double lunger, and the deer died quickly a running a short ways. I have seen my cousin's wife in da U.P. (they're yoopers) shoot several deer with her Savage 223 and kill them all. 55gr PSPs.

Personally, when I hunt deer with a 223 now, I load 70gr TSXs or 62gr TSXs.......

55gr sp will do fine. I've killed a wad with Rem 55gr sp. With my 223, I take only neck shots. My 223 is a slooow twist and won't stabilize anything over 55gr.

I shot a deer last seasons at 210yds (lasered) with 55gr PSP. It fell in it's tracks. I shot it in the back of the head as it was walking away.
Just pick your shots wisely. 223's don't leave the best blood trails.

so what im getting is, yes it is an effective round on whitetail! just aim for the neck or the head?
what about the chest? will it double lung. my 223 is my coyote rifle but the folk here said its fine to use on deer! Right now its zeroed at 100 yards dead on with 55 psp.

thanks guys!

Double lung/heart/neck.

I'd personally avoid the head shots, pretty easy to "F" something up and have a wounded deer running around. Pretty slow way to die, IMO.

Double lung/heart, opening day last year. .223ai + 75gr SSII's.

I couldn't agree more SS! Never understood head shoots on big game. They move their head as much as any part of their body. A heart/lung shot is a much higher % shot.

Also, nice buck Seal! Looks like a Leupold scope, but what make of rifle is that?
