Well I shot some groups today with my 400. The conditions are on the target. They were not favorable but the gun shot well with the wind. I really like shooting this air rifle. Squirrel season is coming and groundhogs are around the corner.

That thing about 15Lbs?!? Good thing ya got that recoil reducin' rifle rest!

Pretty much the same thing I was wondering. That thing looks beefy.

It just weighs 7 lbs. IT is my first PCP rifle and I like it alot. Great new hobby I aquired here. I gaurentee it will shoot .5 at 50yrds without the wind and I do my part. It also still needs to break in a bit.

Hey Steve,

I know you are liking that side lever cocking! The bolt versions I have, though very stout and reliable, take a bit of effort.

Congratulations!

That is a good shootin little gun ya got there.Especially from that far in that type of wind.I would have to say that those squirrels and groundhogs should siriously think about not coming out to play unless the winds blowing at least 50mph.But Im going to ask a stupid question. What exactly is a PCP powered air rifle? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gifThe only pellet guns I have ever owned were the ones you pump up or the spring powered ones once I got older. The best one I ever owned was one my uncle gave me it is an RWS model 36 and I shot it so much I wore the spring out and it was pretty accurate.I wish I had kept some targets I shot with that thing.I could shoot three shots at the bulls eye at 25 yards and if it was calm outside all you could tell was that one or maybe two pellets had gone through the same hole.Me and my friends would even set up bottle caps, jolly ranchers, and suckers at 35 yards for target practice and we thought we were the coolest guys on earth hittin them tiny targets. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gifNow I have a Beeman 1000S I think its called but I cant get it to shoot for some reason.Anways awesome gun and be sure to show us some pictures of them squirrels and groundhogs. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Hey Steve!

If you think you like your PCP airgun in .22 then you should really like some of the ones your neighbor makes!

Quackenbush PCP Air rifles

Dennis is a a bit slow at production but his rifles are super powerful and accurate! I've been trying to get on "the list" for a new one for three years now... Meanwhile, I did manage to find one of his .308 Exiles with the 20" varmint barrel! Shoots 1.5" at 200yards!!!!! Uses 128gr 30cal carbine cast lead bullets. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

OKRattler,

PCP stands for "pre-charged pneumatic."

It has an air tank below the barrel. They are typically filled to 3000psi using a scuba tank. Some people pump them but I fixed tooooo many flats in my life to even consider that nonsense.

The air tanks from various manufacturers have different volumes going from 100cc to 400cc. "Shot count" is one way you might compare one model to the next and of course their max. stated velocity.

Your current pellet gun may want a different pellet. These things can be very finicky about diet. On most air guns they state "1000 fps" or "1250fps" but never disclose that they arrived at that figure by using a 7grain pellet that groups like a 12g shooting buckshot at 100yds.

Nikonut ,
As far as those big bore air guns- it's not my cup of tea or gin or vodka /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif. "Get a bigger hammer" in my world means use powder when appropriate.

This post turned out kinda long, sorry.

Good to see you trying out the PCP airguns. They sure are fun, aren't they?
Anyone that would look down on the AA 400's doesn't know what their talking about. I have shot one of those myself and they are a very accurate air rifle from my limited experience with them, and I've only heard good things about them.
Lots of people out there that love their AirArms guns. It's one of, if not the most, highly recommended PCP's I know of.

One guy that was with me on the first AirgunAdvice hoghunt at the Shiloh Ranch in Oklahoma won the "smallest hog taken" contest using his .22Air Arms to take a hog a little larger than a football!

The AirgunAdvice crowd does have quite a few Rapid fans, and I have met the owner of the board and yes he does have 7 $Rapids$ of various caliber most with custom stock's I'm sure (those are some big frickin rifles). I have traveled and hunted with the administrator, and don't recall him talking down on any particular air rifle.
Many guys with Rapids consider them to be the best airguns, but that doesn't mean they necessarily "look down on" other airguns especially the AA400 which is so popular for a reason. Guys from A/A that hunted Shiloh last Oct and also just this month have also taken hogs with; a couple of .25 AirForce air rifles, .22 and .25 Rapids, a .22 Logun, a .50caliber DragonSlayer air rifle and a DragonSlayer with a custom .454 barrel. Not to mention the custom big-bores. I killed a corsican ram with my .45 air rifle, and am going back again (for an eater sow, I think) in May!

Stevecriner your AirArms is shrouded, right? The one in .22 I shot was, and it was mouse-fart quiet along with being very accurate. It also had some pretty impressive wood on it.

I have the powercurve for my souped-up .25 air rifle a lot closer to being dialed in for 40 or so shots at around 950fps using the lighter Logun Penetrator pellets. I still need to do a few more strings to get the adjustments dialed-in, which will get the shot curve flattened out. Might tune velocity down a little more to like 930fps with 31grainers if the groups don't hold together at that velocity.
I could likely get them to go 1150+ if I dialed it up, and around 1075 or so with 31grainers, but what for? Any trajectory gained wouldn't make up for the almost certain loss of accuracy at that velocity with pellets, especially light ones.

This following is the string I last shot with my .25 using the 25 grain pellets. It still needs the hammerspring preload to be turned down a bit with these .25caliber Logun Penetrators weighting 25 grains with a 2800psi fill. These pellets will be my pest bird pellets for now if they group tight enough.
I had shot a couple of shots with the powerwheel turned up higher and got 1040fps, so I turned it way down. The slower first shot is probably due to the adjustment's made. I will change it up to heavier pellets at about 930-980fps to make this my go-to nutria gun.

Nikonut, My mothers boss wich is a family friend has a DAQ .50, he wants me to shoot a de3er this season with it. Its legal in MO now.

Butcher, It is mouse fart quiet. The only thing thats scares the starlings off is the thump of there buddies. Sparrows will just set and look at each other fall.

I am already lining out Groundhogs for this season.

The stealth factor you have there is pretty sweet.

I can get my .25 to be pretty quiet, but I have to dial the pellets down to about 600-650fps to do so. Still enough for quiet, close-range pigeon (rock dove) poppin', and I'd probably get a whole bunch of shots off of my 500cc tank that way. That's a lot of rock doves!

Of course when the AZ shroud comes along, full power will be very quiet.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The last time I took my .45 airgun out to shoot paper, I was only able to shoot two groups at dusk, 35 and 50 yards.
I was using a fixed4X32mm scope and grouped .5@35yards and .9@50yards center to center testing these 150 grainers, sitting on the ground, off the steady stix.
This was with the harder lead pellets; the softer lead go about 125+fps faster than these did.

Thanks for all of the help AirRifleGuy. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gifI feel stupid for asking what a PCP airgun was but at least I know now. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gifI finally got my Beeman to shooting fairly good I was shooting the wadcutter pellets and they wouldnt shoot very good so I got some pellets that I think are called Fireball pellets. They are pellets with a little copper bb stuck in the nose and they shoot the best. The ones that shoot the second best are called Raptor pellets.Im going to keep trying different types of ammo but I think Im going to shoot these types for now cause I can at least hit a bird with these ones. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
