My first calling stand yesterday was a good one!

Yesterday I got a early start and was at the spot I wanted to make my first stand about 10 minutes before I could see my shotgun barrel. It was pretty open country but I did find a good sized bush to sit up against. After waiting 10 minutes or so I started playing a prairie Dog distress sound.

After 5 minutes or so I saw some movement in the low grass, what I thought was about 100 yards away. I could barley see that it was a coyote because it was not moving very fast. When it stopped I thought it was about 40 yards away. I shot it with a 1-1/2 oz load of TSS #3 shot and it flopped right over. I found out later it was only about 30 yards away.

After playing Adult Rat Distress for about 6 to 8 minutes I spotted a hard charging coyote coming about 400 yards away. When it got to about 35 yards away it turned to my left so I dropped it with another load of TSS #3 shot.

Both of these coyotes were very big coyotes for around here.

In the above picture you can see the perfect bush to hide in about 20 yards from my X-24.

3 or 4 stands later I shot another big male way out there with my 223 rem when it stopped and wouldn't come any closer.

On my next stand I had a pup coyote appear out of nowhere right next to my X-24 so I shot gunned it going away at about 30 yards.

This coyote was very small compared to the other 3 that I got. I made quite a few more stands but didn't see anymore coyotes. It was a fun day.

Outstanding day, Bob, thanks for sharing. Always amazes me the number of coyotes you manage to call in such barren country, especially into shotgun range. Love the pictures, keep 'em coming. Thanks for sharing!

A good outing for sure. I gotta ask, how loud do you play those little critter distress sounds in that open country?
Before I got a new Foxpro X-24 caller I always would get my callers up to full blast volume 40 late into my calling stands.

I use Adult Rat Distress and Vole Squeaks sounds quite a bit at volume 25. Over the years we have killed a ton of coyotes using Adult Rat Distress sound early in our stands.

Most of the time with rodent , rabbit or bird sounds I start out at volume 20 or 25 and after a few minutes go up to 30 and up to volume 35 seven to ten minutes of calling. With my X-24 caller I don't go the volume 40. My X-24 with a extra speaker is very loud.

Quite often after playing a very loud rabbit sound or a loud pup distress sound a coyote or coyotes will show up 3 to 6 minutes after I went to high volume. On many of our calling stands I may go to volume 35 three or four times but only keep it at volume 35 for 15 to 30 seconds.

Most of the pup distress sounds and coyote vocal sounds I play at 35 volume. On most of the ranches I hunt on I can hear coyotes 2 to 3 miles away. I have never seen coyotes shy away from loud volume. Some of the coyotes that stop at 50 to 250 yards away maybe stopping because of high volume. When I have my hunting buddy with me we almost always have a rifle shooter and a shotgun shooter on our calling stands. So if coyotes stop between 50 to 250 yards away that works out great for the rifle shooter.

Bob, how much do you figure each reloaded shell of tss costs you?
When I bought my last batches of TSS shot direct from China it was $36.00 per pound. So just the 1-1/2 oz of TSS shot was $3.37 per shell. So each loaded 3" 1-1/2 oz TSS load was around $4.00 to $4.30 per shell.

Right now it would cost me right at $4.65 per shell just for the shot, and that is buying 5 kilos or more at a time.
