My first contest

Got the opportunity to hunt my first Oklahoma contest with one of the best in the game—Wes, a guy whose record speaks for itself. I learned a ton from him, especially how to cut down the time between setups, and it made the whole night feel intense and nonstop. We missed a few, sure, but we also had a lot of back-to-back stands where we were dropping multiples. The only real breaks I remember were catching my breath while dragging coyotes back to the truck.

On one stand, Wes was over the hill from Will and me. We never saw the coyotes—just heard Wes’s shot, followed by that unmistakable “watermelon thump.” I grinned… then another thump. I laughed… then another, and another. Then Wes says, low and calm: “He’s coming around to your side.”

Will and I spun our rifles, and a coyote started barking close—just over the hill and downwind. I answered with a howl, he started barking again and then watermelon thump, followed by silence. Will and I just started laughing. We never laid eyes on any of those coyotes, but we knew there was a pile of them stacked just over that ridge. I always have a blast hunting with Will.

The contest was one night, sundown to sunup, and we put 43 in the truck.

This is the one that won the “big dog side pot “, I would respect the ones who put on the contest more if they referred to them correctly; coyote. This is a 47.5 pound coyote;

That's amazing.

I don't know anything about these types of contests... looks like a great time.

When they have these types of events, what type of land are most folks hunting?

Truly incredible. That is an astonishing achievement to accomplish in one night. And that 47+ pounder should have been checked for diabetes or a thyroid disorder! Wow, what a chunk! Impressive in all respects.

I assume that you are using a radio of some kind to communicate. Any comments on what brand and performance of it?

You don’t get out much do you? You think you would kill that many wasting your time splitting up yapping on a radio. You are one of those “if I can’t do it those who can cheated”

I don’t know what type of terrain others where hunting, I saw a lot of high racks at checkin, with Texas and Oklahoma plates
