My new 6mm-06

Well, finally decided to drink the 6mm/243 Kool Aid. I've never owned a 6mm/.243 anything, so I had to see what all the hype was about and built a 6mm-06.

I had a Rem 700, 25-06 that hasn't seen much use lately, so decided to cannibalize the action and build a 6mm-06. Looked long and hard at the 240 Weatherby and 6-284, but decided on the 6-06 since I already had lots of 25-06 brass and knew it would feed perfectly out of the existing magazine. Can't wait to put some rounds down range. I have 105 Amaxes and VLD's ready to rock.

Specs:

Remington 700 Action
Brux 8 Twist, 26 inch, Rem Sporter Contour
Chamber cut for long bullets
Bell and Carlson Medalist
Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14X44 Rapid Z 800

I like it!

With that 1/8" twist that should be quite the long range pasture poodle rig right there. And you got a good barrel length too for that cartridge combo.

I hope that we will soon be seeing some pictures of some targets with itty bitty groups real soon.

Nice rig, that's a round I really like. I had the Ackley version for a bit but didn't really give it a chance. I have been wanting another..

2much,

Nice rig! What barrel length and twist did you run?

Why did you sell it?

My 6x284 has a 30" 8 twist Benchmark barrel thats .950 at the muzzle and is getting 3200+ with RL22 and the 105 Amax, I put it together more for longrange groundhogs and Varmint silhouette its way to heavy to be lugging around,

I have a 6mmAI in the works right now should be getting it back in a couple of weeks it will be a 8 twist Broughton built on a long action I went back and forth between the 6AI and a 6-06 when this barrel goes I think I'll go with the 6-06
good luck with your rifle it looks like it should be a great shooter

Mine started life as a .270 Win. I ran necked down 25-06 brass. The first barrel was double punched. It started life as a 6mm Remington. The second barrel was twisted 1-10" and 24", just like first barrel. I only had 2 bullets in mind when I built it. Shooting heavy match type bullets was never a consideration. I ran 85gr Barnes XLCs and 87gr V-maxes tailored to the same POI.

I shot out both barrels. I then opened up bolt face, installed Sako extractor, and turned it into a 7mm mag. You could say the action has seen some use. It is on it's 4th barrel now, and looks like this:

That 6mm ai is more efficent. I believe it was ackley himself that said that case was the best one for the 6mm bullets.More than that and your wasting powder to gain velocity.

I can't disagree with the 6mm AI being more efficient because I haven't gotten to test any of the other overbore 6mm's yet...but to say that you're wasting powder to gain velocity is a little close minded.
It all depends on application.

I intended on doing a 6-06 because I've got a huge supply of 270 brass, but ultimately, I think I'll be doing the 6x284 just because necking down good 6.5-284 brass to 6mm seems much easier than trying to source good 30-06 brass and necking it down 2-3 times and trimming/turning it.

I'll most likely be running RL33 in my 6x284 when it's all said and done and I don't see 3300+ fps in a 28" barrel as being a "waste". It's a very dense, slow powder and I'm loving it in my 7mm. I'll be running both 105 Hybrids and maybe 115 VLDs if the hybrid supply becomes scarce. Besides that, the 115's are everywhere, they're cheap, and RL33 works best with the biggest bullet you can find in the caliber.

Yes, everything comes at a price, but if barrel life was a concern, I'd just build a .308.
Barrels are consumable components. Smoke one out, and start over.

And 6br is even much more effiecent... Were talking about raw horse power & burning barrels here! Looks NICE. I built a 6AI this year on a long action & after seeing the lost space... 6mm/06 prolly not a bad option.

All that said, the new 6AI don't get the love from me like the BR's do. Even thought about putting it up for sale & building another BR to replace it

The 6mm AI is definitely an efficient cartridge, but I didn't build this gun with efficiency in mind. Furthermore, I'm not too hip on fire forming. Talk about inefficient. How much extra powder, barrel life and time, do you waste fire forming brass? Also, I corresponded with a few 6 AI shooters and it sounds like feeding issues are common when using a long action. The 6-06 was a no brainer for me. A 25-06 case passed once through a sizer die is all the forming I do. Plus, a finished round cycles from the magazine to the chamber like butta.
