My new Tikka............HOLY COW!

A dollar bill test is meaningless, even a hundred dollar bill test is worthless. You need many times that much clearance. With a good stiff bull barrel and a stiff stock about .040" is minimum. With a wimpy barrel or a flimsy stock 1/8" may not be enough.

jack, can you define "wimpy barrel" for me? also, if you can't slide a dollar bill through, doesn't that mean that the stock is obviously contacting the barrel at some point? if so, its not totally useless. . . i know what you are saying though. . . it may need more clearance than a dollar bill. . . just trying to play a lil devil's advocate here. . . lol

mikethehunter,

The real test of freefloating barrels is to hold the barrel and smack the stock firmly with your palm, then hold the stock and smack the barrel. If you can make them contact, you do not have enough clearance.

Jack

makes sense to me. . . but does the barrel's vibrations during a shot actually make it move as much as it would by smacking it like that? or are you just testing how much possible movement is there?

Barrels vibrate a lot more than you would think, you just can't see it. If firing was filmed and played back in slow motion it would be visible. Of course, barrel profile and length and caliber all affect the vibration.
