My take on MB 550 traps-

I was recommended them by wife's uncle. They are all he uses, now if I could only catch something. I've had success water trapping with 330's and leg hold. The dirt hole set is something I need to work on. I'm learning.

In Georgia we’re limited in size on footholds. I went with MB500’s many many years ago and even the originals are still holding strong. I prefer the closed jaw, despite what is preached, I have less foot damage.

I have a "how to" on dirt hole set on my youtube channel. That might give you some ideas, it works for me.
What's your youtube channel name, I'll look it up. My buddy showed me how he does it, my f.i.l. showed me how he does it, uncle in law showed me too. I just can't catch anything.

What are you trying to catch? Now ain’t the time for dirt holes if you’re targeting coyotes. Flat sets or scent post sets. A good gland lure will work. Coyotes home ranges have dropped considerably with denning going on, so you go to be close.

I started out trying for bobcat. Indiana finally opened a trapping season on them, after it closed due to quota fill, me and the boy tried for coyote. Come November we'll try again.

Bobcats like gaudy flashy sets…think 5yr old hyped up on caffeine and make a set. They’re naturally curious and can’t help themselves. You can guide like it’s nobodies business on cats too. If you find scat, put in a set right beside it and blend as good as possible.

Coyotes are generally just the opposite, you want that set as natural as possible.

Remember with lure, less is more. You want them “hunting” that smell, not getting a nose full from 6ft away. With bait just make sure you use enough to make it worth their effort. I’m not a big coyote or fox urine fan because of the deer attraction. Bobcat urine doesn’t draw as many deer and will catch coyotes, fox, and cats. Plus 95% of the cats I catch have a full bladder. Carry extra pint bottles to fill up cause about 5-6 full bladders can fill one up.

Years ago predator population assessments used a flat sifted dirt set(no trap) about 3' in diameter. Scent stick placed in the center. Than read the tracks for visits. I do this sometimes when starting on a new property. A small wood dowel with wool on the end above ground(1-2 inches exposed) will hold a small amount of lure or bait. You can use it to determine travel areas and the brand/type lure that the local predators are attracted to. With gas prices up I will pre bait a dirt hole(no trap but sifted) than I can check after several days. No coyote visit don't set there.
